16lb Barbel from Thames Tributary

Following the capture of a 15lb barbel three weeks ago, Korum backed Duncan Charman suffered nine consecutive blanks on a difficult Thames Tributary.

Undeterred and after a sleepless night Duncan (42) from Aldershot, Hampshire, rose at 4:30am and headed for the river when most other anglers were still asleep.

Having his tackle ready to grab and go at any opportunity obviously helped, and it took just twenty minutes, well before dawn had arrived, after his first cast to see the tip pull round.

Duncan said:

“The swim I was fishing had a big snag downstream so it was hit and hold almost, which created a fantastic fight and which saw lots of swirls and tail slapping under the rod tip.

“I wasn’t expecting a fish of 16lbs 1oz and would certainly have given it a bit more credit if I’d known.”

The fish took a 13mm Sonu-baits hard pellet with a paste mix of the same pressed around the lead.

End tackle was the tried and tested 10lb Sufix Camfusion with a size 8 barbless S3 hook. Main line was 10lbs fished on a Korum Neoteric 12ft Quiver rod.
