BARBEL RIVERS AND CAPTURES by The Barbel Catcher’s Club
Price: £ 22.50
Published by The Crowood press
ISBN 1 86126 660 X

Just as the title suggests the theme running throughout this book is the many and varied rivers in the UK that hold barbel. Each chapter on the rivers is written by an acknowledged expert on that particular river and usually includes his captures from the river, the methods and baits he uses, and his thoughts on the river itself as a home for barbel.

The contents include:

  • Individual chapters on 29 rivers, or sections of river
  • Detailed accounts of the capture of a big barbel from each river
  • Modern baits – both pellets and HNV specials
  • Scores of photographs, some in full colour, of barbel catches over 10lb
  • Diagrams illustrating rigs, feeders and swims
  • A Review of developments in barbel fishing since the late 1980s, and a consideration of the future of barbel fishing
  • Details of the Barbel Catchers River Records and the club’s top 50 barbel

FISHINGmagic VERDICT

If you’re interested in barbel then you’ll find it hard not to be interested in this book, particular the chapters about the rivers you fish.

But don’t be put off from reading the chapters on the rivers you have never fished or are never likely to fish, for there is always something to learn from another angler, no matter which river he fishes.

The book is written by a wealth of barbel experts so it comes as no surprise to learn that there are lots of ideas they write about that are well worth trying on ‘your’ river. There are rigs, baits and other matters to do with catching barbel that just may be better than the way you already approach your own barbel fishing.

Who knows? It’s a too-proud man who can’t accept that someone, somewhere, owns a little part of the puzzle that you didn’t even know existed. It may be only a tiny part, but collect them all, or even most of them, and you’ll begin to see the complete picture.
