ENTERPRISE TACKLE IMITATION LUNCHEON MEAT
Price: £ 1.95

A good match for the real thing
I was only wondering the other week how long it would be before Enterprise produced an imitation luncheon meat. It seemed to be the only popular angler’s bait that remained that hadn’t yet been imitated in a synthetic material. Then, as if by magic, a couple of packs popped through my letter box.

Like many of the other imitation baits from Enterprise, this luncheon meat is very buoyant. It is also soft, yet tough enough to stay on the hook or hair even when a firm cast has been made and to resist the attentions of crayfish.

Matching the colour of real luncheon meat exactly (or at least the most popular, paler versions) the texture does look like real meat, especially when a piece has been torn from the block rather than cut.

The ‘meat’ already has a kind of sweet smell that could appeal to fish, although it is capable of taking on any flavour of your choice if it is soaked for a spell.

FISHINGmagic VERDICT

Soft, tough and takes on a flavour
More often than not I like to use these imitation baits alongside a piece of the real thing, using the imitation to counterbalance the whole bait to present a popped up or critically balanced offering.

Sometimes I’ll sandwich a piece of the false stuff between two pieces of the real thing when I just want that little extra buoyancy when, say, the fish are taking ‘on the drop’ or I just want to match the buoyancy of the real thing.

Could be a very useful item to have in your tackle box when fishing commercials for carp and they’re mad on feed. With a piece of this false meat, well flavoured, that may be all you need to keep casting and catching fish time after time. And for barbel when you have a good shoal well on feed, or a big fish or two that will accept a big (suitably weighted) piece that goes trundling past them.
