can anyone recommend a good landin net that best suits barbel fishing, ive recently converted from match angling and my current 'carp friendly' net catches on the barbels dorsal fin, which im not happy about as fish welfare is paramount

A double T landing net if you want a triangular jobbie, or an abu spoon type one if that takes your fancy.

There is only one landing net for barbel and that is the one marketed by Leslies. It is round and will hold the biggest barbel that has ever swam.

I truly hate and detest tri-angular nets with silly strings across the front.

Should be banned!!

Bear in mind that too fine a mesh can be very difficult to manoeuvre in fast/heavy current.

Just look up Leslies of Luton on google. It's not the cheapest net but it is the best I have ever seen. I've landed 15 lb pike in mine - no problem.

I've got the Drennan super specialist 22" net. I've never actually landed a Barbel in it because I've not fished for them since getting it but it behaves really well in fast flowing water and would manage a 20lb Carp, so it would easily accommodate any Barbel you're likely to come across.

As much as I would like a landing net like Rons they are very expensive. I use the Fox Predetor net in compination with an ESP handle and am very happy with it!

I have the fox predator and i'm very happy with it .
it fits a 16 kilo carp in fast flowing water so a barbel is no game for this net

thats a tough call Baldy, I bought a 28" Fox spoon (?30) for my barbel fishing as, like Ron, i didn't like triangles. However on 2 occasions i had barbel trap their dorsal spines in the net causing some damage to the fish and ending in me cutting a hole in the net. After the first occasion I just put it down to bad luck but on the second time of it happening i decided to seek out a barbel friendly net at any cost.

I only found one that was marketed as barbel friendly and that was a fox 32" Barbel Specialist with handle, (not very long at 6ft). This cost a whopping ?50 and even worse than that was triangular!!!! Now i've landed a fair few barbel with it and not had any problems. Now that may just be down to luck - who knows but so far so good.

personally if I was starting out barbel fishing and i read this i'd probably think balls to it, i'm not paying ?50 for a net the lads just been unlucky BUT having damaged 2 fish my thinkings changed. It may be worth looking out for a cheaper version of the Fox Barbel net i think BFW may sell one.

ive fished for barbel a gooood number of times over the years on both running water(ribble/dane) and still water (cudmore and other puddles of fish soup) but only recently decided to sell my match gear and target barbel. i now have everything i need except the right net!!! ive spent a lot on rods/reels and other gear so far and it looks like im gunna have to pay my money for the net i need! at least now i have three months to get it,once i find it, lol...

Seems like there's an opportunity here for some forward-thinking tackle manufacturer -hint, hint!!!

You need a net with large type mesh when fishing fast water swims.I find the triangle ones with the fine mesh just get swept away or just collapse.
