Well spotted Born Again! In a similar vein I've just noticed that the BAA stretches on the map at:

http://www.baa.uk.com/where_to_fish/42.aspx

are also different to the one on my BAA book (from a few years back). The old map showed Bushley 11/12 on the left hand bank, but the new map excludes this. I guess I need to buy a new book :-O and retract my moaning about them not updating the maps.

Also there's this:

http://www.baa.uk.com/where_to_fish/43.aspx

which looks like a new stretch of the Severn that wasn't included in my book. I've often been tempted to cast out a line on this stretch when I've been walking to Apperley Pools, but I've always refrained (because I'm a good boy! But also because the river looks wide and scary just there!) but it looks like I'm now entitled to.

Right, I'm off to have a good look at the BAA waters pages.

Cheers,

Derek

The next 6 weeks will be Dynamite !!

We will see.................

"The BAA will be mighty again"
I dont think so,and it will continue to decline as the main bulk of anglers will still fish pools.
Most have already lost the powers of walking, and there are not many cafes at Bushley 4.
Further syndication will continue as specialists seek peace and quiet, away from busy club waters, full of Barbel Anglers, where before it was Match anglers.
The days of coaches from afar are long gone, now it is 4/4s and Volvos, and funny accents ,and holiday homes ,or caravans.

One seriously wonders what John Williams and fellow officials does at "Balti Towers" all day.
He certainly does not talk to any Specialists!

Pons......of course the BAA can become mighty again.......but as i said it needs new blood.

If the majority of angers want pools then thats what they should look at.......but if you think "specialists" seek peace and quiet you are very wrong....i stopped fishing SS a while back because it was full of noisy "specialists"!

With a team of modern forward looking anglers the BAA could be right on top and cater for all types of angling.

I remember when they had practically untouched gravel pits that we caught superp specimens from.....eg in Newport pagnall, Cambrigde, etc they were,if i remember shared waters, NP was shared with London AA i believe...perhaps that is a way foreward.

Personally i don't want to see us losing rivers to syndicates, once the fishing evolves away from their "ways" they will disapear.........also big clubs run correctly would have more "clout" in pollution cases.

Yes...the BAA could be mighty again!

Graham,
Even by my cryptic standards that's got me puzzled.
Shall be calling you the Riddler ,next.
Paul,
Wish I shared your enthusiasm, but think club revenues will continue to fall ,and clubs will trim the sails to an affordable level of rent and waters.

SS may be noisy near the car park, but there is loads of it never fished anymore, which can be witnessed from a boat,as the lack of swims will testify.

Specialists do want peace and quiet and will happily pay for it.
The section of water run by Scubie Steve, was previously BS waters, and before that BAA,and the BS only charged ?5 a season for it,and still hardly anybody wanted a ticket.
Now Steve is inundated with potential members.
New blood may help, and a new direction, but it is still match orientated, and they determine the outcome through affiliated clubs, lone specialists will be outvoted all the time.
Pons.

He has a point Pons.......we all view the half full glass with different thoughts!

You have hit the nail on the head "lone" specialists will never be heard.....they are there own worst enemy.

I hate the term nowadays!

Excuse me fellas but seeing as you all know this part of the river I thought I'd tap you up for some info.

Keen to fish the Severn and Wye for barbel and chub. Looked at BAA site and noticed Unicorn Inn close to the river @Hampton laode. I think this is where Matt Hayes did a shot some time ago and caught a few barbel. Have you fished this stretch and if so what's coming out these days?

Is the pub good for an overnight stay?

I don't know about the Unicorn on the Severn. But I was eating at the Red Lion at Bredwardine (Nr Hereford) on the R Wye and they have some fishing on the Wye and do accom. There are plenty pictures of happy fishermen with large barbel on the walls. They have a website as well http://www.redlion-hotel.com/

I haven't fished the stretch, but intend to. Hope that helps a bit.

Hi Thalia,

I know the Severn around that area a bit.
I live in Bridgnorth.

The unicorn has caravans to hire out, and touring/tent pitches to rent.

It can get a bit busy around there, but if your prepared to walk a bit you can get away from the crowds.

Bridgnorth is only a few miles a way, if its only for one night, you might be better off with a B+B.

If you want anymore info, just ask and we can continue it on Email.

The Red Lion is great, good fishing and good company in the bar. It does respond well to a roaming aproach but there are also plenty of places where you can sit it out if that is your preference.

P.S. What sort of work do you do that means you get tied up?

Getting back to the fishing, I think the Lower Severn has been quite good this year. I haven't blanked yet on numerous stretches and have taken fish to 11-10. And that biggy was caught at 4:30 in the afternoon on a bright, hot sunny day, so you don't have to fish until the wee hours to catch.

You have to spend time on the lower river to understand it, but once you get to know the areas and the fishes habits the fishing isn't too difficult.

I agree. Its not always plain sailing, sometimes an unexpected and inexplicable blank rears its ugly head.

Unfortunately, the lower severn isnt keeping up with the increase in average sizes of barbel that other rivers are showing.

That's not always a problem Darren - I was talking to someone at the Throop fishery who lives local and he has caught fish to 14lb quite regularly. He was though very worried that the fish in the 5-6lb class were just not about.
