I'm a bit surprised that nobody else has mentioned Kamasan Animal. They suit me

I've still got a packet of those in a size 8 spade end from years ago, they were one of the larger hooks that actually came in a spade pattern and a ruddy decent sized spade it is too.

I've only used the Guru QM1 size 10 once, and caught a 15lb barbel and am now sold on this hook for pellet fishing.

I often use the Fox SSBP arma-point teflon hook which is very sharp and resilient to blunting over rocky/gravelly bottoms and has a shortish wide gape and reversed point and doesn't glint too much in the light either (see pic).

Another hook that I find pretty good over gravel is the Korda teflon wide gape hook.

If I need a slightly longer shank then I often use Drennan Specialist and Super Specialist hooks.

It usually depends on the baits I'm using and how I'm trying to present them.

Keith

Have to agree with you on the Fox SSBP's,trouble is they've discontinued them Keith, even though I still have some left i'm on the lookout for a similar hook,i've bought some of the guru umgb hooks and these look good, for maggot feeder work I like the Drennan SS barbel, mainly because I like straight point hooks for maggot.

I used these for a long time and caught quite a few fish. Then i got it into my head that they were too shiney   Totally irrational as i had caught Perch, Roach, Barbel etc on them without any problem:eek:mg::) Why does this happen sometimes?

P.S. i think it was something to do with seamless hooks like the Korum and Owner one's

I see the fear of all things shiny, but in this day and age with so much litter thrown in and around water, there is plenty of things that shouldn't be,that are,the scene in one of the barbel days and ways here there are coke cans and others sitting in amongst feeding barbel.

That's bad news Whitty, I'm only glad that I've still got a few packs of them left.

Indeed Keith,it was one of the few hooks I had complete faith in and in barbel fishing as we all know you need to have confidence that all your tackle is up to the task.As an aside I used Talon tips for a time alongside the SSBP,but sadly they weren't in the same league, strength wise(even though the wire thickness seemed identical),plus they were a glossy black pattern.

May I ask what tackle your using when fishing for barbel with Drennan SS(not the barbel version, but straight SS's)I find on many weedy waters with good fish present it's possible to open them up,years ago when I used 6lb line it was fine, with my present minimum of 10lb sadly not man enough for my tackle, even my 1.6oz Harrison Avon special has the power to open them, when the power is needed.

As much as I like and often use the Drennan hooks Alan, if going for hit and hold in very snaggy swims I tend to go for the ESP raptor, the ultra reliable 'Harry' Avon Specialist 1.5t/c and 12lb ProGold. You can almost hear the corks squeak with a big fish on but the hook/hook hold has never been a problem.........:)

It's not so much hit and hold Jerry,if anglers are using 1.75lb tc rods for barbel, which a lot do,then basically no pressure can be applied without a chance of opening up the hook and barbel are not a fish that you can play really lightly, they don't allow it.
