Do most you barbel anglers use one ?

I normally do for carp and tench both my mine are either a big soft sided cradle or a small mat for when after tench but to be honest it's more like a roll of laminate underlay!

What can people recommend for roving ?

Thanks

I don't always use one with barbel it depends where I was fishing if I knew there was plenty of soft grass I didn't carry one but most places I would.

Any smallish light mat with enough thickness to give protection will do the job, without looking I think mines a Korum (had it ages :) ) it has a flap on it for kneeling on to stop getting wet knees which is important at my age :D

Being 31 years young I don't really worry about my knees but being a agricultural engineer where on knees alot I have noticed that at times they do click and ache if knelt down alot ... Not a good sign is it

Il have a look see what's about as I have a korum chair and bag that clips together and has loops where could clip a mat onto

I invariably carry one, regardless of the type of fishing I'm doing. However, the reality is that I use one as a seat, and little more, as often as not.

Fox, Korum and Drennan (amongst others) all do smaller, lighter, specialist models.

Some might be better transported to the same brand luggage so that clips are definitely compatible, but you don't have to have matching brand luggage to use them.

I use a small unhooking mat for use as you describe.( TFG I think).
The reason is that it rolls up and can be strapped on top of the rucksack. Useful when wet.

These are a clever idea and worth a look..Brand New Korum Multi Mat - (KMLUG/31) | eBay
Need another pair of hands , bucket with bait and end tackle in . Rucksack has flask lunch and water proofs in then quiver in other hand / shoulder.

I will have a look as could be useful for scales and other bits in there and looks like could use as a sling too

I have the older version of the Korum Multi-Mat. It has recently been ditched in a drive to further cut down what I take with me to the river.

Sam , I have got the 2 rod sleeve which is handy as carry a net handle and bank sticks, what's the mat like?

I think as anglers we do seem to collect various luggage !

Pretty good. Surprisingly thick and well padded for what appears to be a fairly small thing when rolled up. You'd probably need a bag or rucksack with straps to attach it if it's not a Drennan with the corresponding clips.
I have the korum kit , I look at what korum mats they do , I use the chair and bag even on commercials dead handy as hate carrying loads and hate taking a barrow with me .

Do you bother taking a chair even in winter if going after barbel or chub and move swims every hour ?

On the river, I rarely do anything but trot and don't take a chair. The only sitting I do is when tackling up and down. An unhooking matt is fine for that.

Ah I see , I would be mainly ledgering but depending on the river I would do some trotting . I'm starting to think is there any point of a chair if only in a swim for a hour ish but I have been told at times with barbel you do need to play the waiting game

I use the little Drennan roll up one, it's pretty good.

To be honest, I only actually use it when there's not soft grass, or for the sake of it at commercials where they demand the use of them.

I fish less and less commercials these days and spend most of my time on rivers & canals where there's plenty of soft grass. Worst comes to worst I will unhook in the water.

I have been put of commercials this summer . Well ones that get too busy . Been on club lakes this summer and now starting in rivers.

Going onto river seven this weekend for the 1st time . Little rivers by me are a tad over grown so thought get more luck on a bigger river

yes the drennan one is very good, the two Velcro straps it as means it can be attached to almost anything if you don't have the drennan bag for it

Yeah, they do serve a purpose for me, but the natural waters will always be my first choice. I much prefer the peace and quiet of the riverbank.

Yes I'm like that too prefer the peace as hate being crowded. There more to fishing than just catching. Enjoying nature and what's around you .

But commercials good for a bend when times are hard or teaching
