Hi all...

I wonder if anyone can point me to a decent diagram for a knot for a spade end hook??

I have 2 different hook tyers and can't get on with either of them... I need to get it sussed by hand!!

Thanks in advance

Andy.

Hold the hook with your thumb and first finger.

Shank pointing upwards.

Take the line in your other hand and lie it alongside the shank.

Clasp the line with finger and thumb.

Bring the line back up to the end of the shank. and clasp that also.

You have now made a false loop.

Wrap the line around the shank of the hook approx 5-7 turns, fairly firmly.

Take the end of the line and pass it through the false loop.

Moisten the knot on the line with saliva and gently pull tight.

Make sure the line comes off the back of the spade end.

i.e. the spade end is pointing away from the line.

For smaller fish like Roach, Perch, and skimmer Bream up to about 2-3 lb yes. And no more than 3 lb breaking strain line.

4lb line and over I would use an eyed hook personally.

With 4lb line and an eyed hook I would be fishing for hard fighting fish like Chub. I would tie a five turn grinner knot on this one.

For the smaller fish like Roach, Perch and skimmers, a spade end knot is neater and smaller. But it is quite a strong knot for that purpose.

So if I'm fishing for tench and larger bream etc on the canal eyed are better then in your opinion??

I usually start with a hair on mine, whether i leger or float fish.... then if i need to i just snip the hair off??

Is this a bad approach?

I had a 5-6lb tench on this method, my pb of any fish!!

In my opinion yes mate. An eyed hook is better for the larger fish
Instead of snipping the hair off, why not tie a small swivell on the end of your mainline?
Then it would only be a matter changeing the hooklength over and thereby save your hair rigs. Or use a quick change link.

That makes sence Baz, as I was switching between the two recently and had to keep retying the hook lenght.

As far as I'm aware, I've never lost a fish specifically because I was using a spade-end hook, but I can never quite get it out of my head that the 'spade' might cut through the line during the fight.......
