Going to fish a lake on Thursday that is an old gravel pit. I believe the bottom is a mixture of gravel bars and silt pockets, along with rushes/lily pads.

It's a big old lake and I want to know the best way of finding a suitable spot in whatever swim I choose. Should I chuck a lead out first to find some features underwater or do you just pick a marker, distance, and keep feeding to that spot?

it would be better to be on a gravel bar as when your feeder lands on a silt bed if it is very silty it will slowly sink.
as you said chuck a lead out and see what you find also look to feed an inside swim so you can switch between the 2.
