Evening all.
How is everyone, I'm Rob from sunny Wales. Just joined as started fishing again after a break of 25 years. Obviously things have moved on a bit in regards to gear since i last fished.
So any ideas on a good beginners setup for general coarse and carp.
I have chairs, tents, bivvy etc etc.

Just looking for ideas on decent modern rods, reels, luggage etc and a decent reputable dealer.

I'm not looking for budget buys but i'm also not looking to remortgage my home.
Looking for a decent setup

Many thanks

Rob

It's a tricky one mate, depends on what your gonna be doing most with them but, I have the greys prodigy specimen 1.75tc rods and i bloody love then, and they do me pretty much everything from half decent carp to good chub and barbel, but if your after big carp your gonna want to up it to out and out carp rods, reel wise, I just brought a pair of fox eos 10000 bait runners, although I've not used them yet, smashed ribs, (don't go through scaffolding) there gonna cover everything I do, seem good reels I've had daiwa reels, shimano, greys and they've done me good,I just can't help buying fishing stuff,, but that's what I like, get yourself out around the tackle shops, try different reels on different rods and find out what works for you and what you like the feel of, it's all part of the fun, luggage wise, it all does pretty much the same thing, don't skimp on your rod holdall, it's gonna pretext your pride and joy, lol, but I would if I were you definatly get out and try different reels and rods and have play around and see what you like before you commit to buying anything,

This is one of those threads where everyone will recommend what they use.
Head to a well stocked shop and have a play!

So any ideas on a good beginners setup for general coarse and carp.

Well t3335e that's a fairly wide ranging scope.... if you want to fish exclusively for carp you'd need specialised kit, if you intend to fish with coarse gear that will cope with the odd carp then that brings a different set of kit into the equation,

For specialist carping I'd suggest a pair of Fox Warrior or Chub Outkast Rods in 2.75lb or 3lb test curves and Shimano 10000RA reels spooled with 12lb main lines (summat like Daiwa Sensor) as a reasonably cheap starter kit... Chuck in a pair of Fox Micron MX alarms and you're off and running, others on this site may have other suggestions, but the above are solid bits of kit, tried and trusted and reasonably cheap..

now for general coarse with a bit of carp, I'd suggest something like a Shimano Forcemaster or Drennan Red Range rod in 11 foot both for the Commercial Waggler and Feeder rods (the float rods are often called Pellet Waggler/Commercial rods) mated with either a 3000 or 4000 size reels...

I'd suggest the 3000 with the float rod with a 5lb hi tech mainline like Daiwa Hypersensor.... and the 4000 with the feeder with a 6lb stock mainline like Guru Dragline or Plain Daiwa Sensor, there are many good reels about about, but the Daiwa Sweepfire range is solid, reliable, cheap, and should last a while... or at least till you decide which direction you are headed in... hope this helps

Thank you all for your input, there is just so much choice out there. When i used to fish many decades ago most of my kit was second hand and hand me downs as a 14yr old kid at the time a rod was a rod and was just happy to be fishing.

Basically what i'm looking for is a decent pair of carp rods and reels and also a good all rounder general coarse rod and reel, plus maybe a decent short pole 9 - 11m to start as i've never used one.

I quite like the greys prodigy txl specimen (any thoughts?) and currently chapmans angling are doing a deal with a free Greys GSF40 reel (any thoughts)

On the Carp side i'm torn between greys prodigy gt3 or gt5. or go slightly cheaper and go with the fox warrior s.

Also whats the deal with Stillwater BPX, they seem to have fantastic reviews and are bargain priced? Anybody use them here?

If you want to go even cheaper than the Fox take a look at the Daiwa Black Widow. A very cheap rod that gets excellent reviews.

The Fox Warrior S's are good rods, the Stillwater reels are cheap for a reason.... they are just not as well built as Shimano's, Carp reels take a lot of stick, so I'd forget about budget, and buy quality... most folk on this board would agree with that...

Addendum... Stillwater BPX's are big pit reels, if you are not going for huge chucks then they are not really going to be suitable

Pole wise you can get any number of 9-11mt poles... it depends on how much you want to pay.... if you are going to fish a water that contains carp then go for a Margin pole. They are more capable of landing carp on heavy elastics....

for myself I have a Drennan Red Range 11mt pole. it's rated to a 20 elastic for carp, it comes with a spare top two, and has side pullers for the elastics... It costs £225 and has everything you need to elasticate it bar the elastics (as they are down to personal choice)

hope this helps

Reel wise go with Shimano or Diawa , better to buy the cheaper end of these two markers if that's your budget than spend your money on cheap reels , I bought a 30 quid reel and it lasted less than a year can't remember the make but it was a name angling company

I don't think you'll go wrong with the greys, I love them, and reels are good to,

Ok, after messing about a bit at local tackle shop i have now got myself
2 Greys GT3 12ft 2.75lb rods
2 Shimano ST RB 10000
1 Greys Prodigy TXL Specimen 1.25lb with a Greys GFR40

That should cover me for most things, now to finda decent priced quality pole

Thank you all for your help

Good that you got yourself sorted, t3335e - I recently helped a friend get back into fishing after a long time off, and needing to get himself kitted out from scratch. From this advice, I put together a couple of guides on what general coarse fishing equipment can be obtained for a modest price, and the sort of things every angler should have in their tackle box.

I was surprised with what you can get for about £150 nowadays, considering the price I paid for things like bite alarms, baitrunners, etc. when I kitted myself out ~10 years ago. Manufacturing techniques are obviously much more refined!

Did you find a decent pole by the way, t3335e? I would be interested to hear what you went for.

Still looking for a pole, again so much choice out there i just lost the will to live.
I'm going to enjoy a few weeks with my new rods and then start looking for a pole again.
