Just keeping options open . Although looking forward to doing some trotting for Roach . Used to enjoy Eel fishing in the summer , usually float fishing . Sometimes would night fish , so was thinking in terms of maybe using them then . Have used a couple of times when fishing for flatties to combat deep hooking .

I've considered circle hooks for eel fishing, having already used them for pike and zander over the last couple of seasons.

For eels I would personally look to tie them to something other than nylon though, to prevent bite offs.

Some of my Mustad Demon go down to quite a small size although I can't say what off the top of my head but I think the chances of finding a circle hook ready tied to a material and strength for the multitude of jobs in hand are akin to winning the lottery.

Good luck with your search though and keep us posted if you find any, I for one would be interested.

Thanks everyone for the quality of knowledge in the replies . As I am starting from scratch with buying hooks , I thought I would for ease get them already tied to nylon . I have found a hook tyer amongst my tackle so shall have a practise with that . I haven't used a hook smaller than a size 6 in over 20 years due to going sea fishing . So thought I would struggle with threading the line through the eye of a hook . Will have a look at those hooks that have been recommended & order some .

I don't know what Guru are marketing those as but that point looks at least sixty degrees short of a circle hook imo...

Not to say it's not a worthy suggestion in its own right :)

Yea I can see what yer saying Steve, don't know why Guru and Preston both market what they call circle hooks when they look nothing like a true circle hook and to be honest are pretty much inferior :eek:mg:

If anything they look hardly any different from just short shank wide gape hooks that have a swept point, not that much different from a kamasan b560 wide gape swept point

I've specialised in Thames estuary bass fishing along some of me local low water marks because there simply within walking distance and have been using circle hooks on and off for the best part of 20 years now and these are proper true circle hooks,

Not like what Guru and Preston have brought out because the overall percentage of the bend has somewhat been drastically lost

This is why in me first post I stated that I'm not holding me breath because I've not yet found anything for coarse fishing that resembles what I'd call a true circle hook

Don't forget that they say to use Circle hooks two sizes larger than the equivalent J hook, so your 14 - 18's are the equivalent of conventional 16 - 22's, pretty small !

Not sure if, as self hookers, they will work with a non-agressive non-predatory species like Roach ? Be interesting to find out if you have any positive results with them.

I got a little bit interested in small circle hooks way back when, when they first came out but didn't persist with them enough to either satisfy myself that they worked better than a J hook or didn't.

Didn't realise that . By luck have ordered size 12 so should be ok .

Here's a photo of a true circle hook - it's a Mustad Demon.

https://www.fishingmegastore.com/mustad-39951npbn-1xf-demon-pft-circle~14030.html

A circle hook has a point which is aligned at 90 degrees to the hook shank. It's used mainly for bigger baits ( I've used them with sprats/smelt/sardines for pike and lob worms for perch) where the timing of the strike can be hard to judge. The hook's designed so that it only catches on the edge of the mouth. Most pike I catch on circle are hooked neatly in the scissors and so they are very easy to unhook.

The smallest Mustad Demon is a size 12.

There was a discussion on this forum recently about circle hooks.

i found these ideal when the fish is hooked its very hard for them to come off all you need to get the hook out is a small paire of pinchers.

Iv'e only skimmed through this and wondered if you could use them with maggots for Perch and Roach on the Canal and what size. Really hate deep hooking fish, especially small greed perch:)

Not relevant in one way , but bought a pack of the Sakuma hooks in 3/0 for sea fishing a couple of weeks ago . Fished deal pier and person I went with kept getting snagged with standard hooks , as a couple of times hooks came back straightened . Where as the circle hooks didn't snag . But didn't catch anything with them .
