I want to take my son away for a long weekend fishing for barbel & Chub, I want a place that I can take my Touring Caravan preferably next to the water or within walking distance. Does anybody know of such a venue on the river severn where we can catch plenty of barbel? and get permits to fish?.

Kieth,
I can't think of one on the Severn right now but how about the Wye? a great site is Lucksall in Mordiford, a few miles from Hereford....the Lugg is also very close.....fish from outside the van on the riverside pegs.....phone up to check availability cos it's popular!.......most of the sites i know on the Severn are static sites but there is a tourer site at the Camp hotel public house at Grimley, Nr Worcester (a443 Tenbury road)there is also a small pool on site if you like that kind of thing

Hi Keith
We had a good weeks holiday at bank farm by Bewdley. (www.accommodation.uk.net.bankfarm.htm)
Although this is a static caravan park they do have a small tourer site. It would be best to give them a ring to check availability. The river is about 5 min walk or you can take your car. It is BAA water but they sell day tickets on site. This area offers a great centre for this part of the river being very close to Arley, Hampton Load etc. etc.

The Unicorn takes caravans, but the stretch beside it is no longer a day ticket water, as it leased to the Barbel Society.

Yes but downstream of the unicorn and the opposite bank, which you can reach by the ferry, is BAA water, which can be fished on a day ticket during the week. Plus the full ticket is only ?20. The BAA have loads of water along that stretch within 5 - 10 minutes drive of the unicorn.

The unicorn is a pub that also controls a caravan and camping site on the west bank of the Severn at Hampton Loade by the way.

My mate & I used to stay at a farm field on the east bank of the Severn at Hampton Loade... The farmer there takes caravans and tents. It is a 5 minute walk across two fields to the waters edge.
I caught 125lb of Barbel there in a morning and Martin, my mate, (who isn't very good) caught nearly 50lb! Its a cracking stretch controlled by the BAA.

Just search around the area at Hampton Loade, there are several sites to choose from

The Wigfield Arms at Montford bridge just outside Shrewsbury will let you park your caravan in the grounds and then fish the water on a day ticket.

Also on the othr side of the bridge there is a caravan club site and the fishing is free.

Right John, that little comment's not going to go unanswered. I assume you're talking about the day around 20 years ago when you pinched the best swim and flogged away with the swimfeeder (the only method you can still only use with any degree of competance)as opposed to my superb bag of float caught higher than average sized barbel. I'm not bitter after all these years!

Neither of us have fished Hampton Loade for years but I hear its still a good venue - must get back there

Got to go, off to fish the Wye - He He

ps Professor? and I thought all these years you were a milk carton salesman.

The Severn does have a tendency to sort out the men from the boys... Some are scared by the sheer size and power of the river and prefer to stick to the edge with a little float and settle for a couple of chance fish... Whilst others pull out the big guns, stick on some weight and go full forward into the middle of the river to sort out the best fish.....

.....Harder fishing to challenge the river but the rewards are surely better if you can master it!

Of course, if you are not up to it then stick to the edge with a little float and pick up a couple of chance "suicide" fish that may happen to pass by!

You're quite right John, I don't know what I was thinking. I hope that one day I'll come near to matching your superior all round ability (not just in fishing but in all aspects of achievement)- but for now that remains just a far off dream.

Dear Doctor John,
We are giving it another try tomorrow almost,
there is a natural stillwater next to the severn just north of Tewkesbury with a good head of Bream and Roach as well as some very
large Tench and Carp so we will se if this restores any confidence, if not its back to the commercial pools for me not much skill factor but loads of instant gratification what a coward I am.
