bait sizes

I was been told by one of my friends that you should always fish a big bait over lots of smaller baits but recently someone else told me that a small bait fished over bigger baits works better, which one works best or is there a different way which works better?

I usually fish different bait sizes and shapes all the time.
I always mix different sizes of pellet together and ditto with particles.
When boilie fishing my chops always vary in shape and size.
My only exception to this is when I am fishing at extreme range and need large, hard and round baits to achieve the necessary distance with a throwing stick.
Giving the carp variety in shape and size gives them less chance of spotting and dismissing your hookbait.
