Can you guys give some pointers as to your experience, if any, on catching Carp on the artifcial fly e.g. dressings, tactics etc.

I realise it's probably getting late in the year but!!!!.

I'd say the same as when trout fishing, try to mimic the hatch.
In the spring I've enjoyed some success on fry imitations, especially the silvery blue ones that look like roach.
That's if the jacks don't get to them first.

The Colonels Creeper is a beige looking lure that looks like a leatherjacket or similar.

I know this may not be exactly what you mean, but i have had them at Broadland's on Fly gear and a mixer. Biggest was "adie's Leather" at 26 and it went*&%$@?* mental for 40 minutes.
Not for the faint hearted but great fun once i sussed out how to cast the damn thing.
Good luck

There is another post about this on here somewhere, one of the post said about making a trout pellet pattern & casting it into fish feeding on floaters

I assumed that Ray wanted to catch them on the fly and not just on fly gear.

Drilled, hair rigged chum or floating pellets can be put to feeding fish without the disturbance of a controller.
It's just that most fisheries don't have the necessary bank space to be able to cast too much.

Gypsy Dave - Big Fat, stocked Rainbows, 'wallow' when hooked, very little fight no long runs, little stamina its like comparing me with a fresh run salmon or an Olympic athlete! Please realise my experience of modern 'big Carp' is very limited so you may indeed have a different opinion. What was your rod reel line’ leader' setup? Any tips on keeping the 'beasties' away from snags.

Craig - I think that was me, or at least I had some input to the thread, but thanks anyway for the pointer. I hope I could do the same for you some day.

Carp Angler - Spot on, exactly what I wanted.
It appears that I can get fish 'up' by loose feeding mixers etc, I now intend to deceive 'em with artificial naturals and as your post indicates a 'daddy long legs' has got to be a first line of attack. It will be very interesting to see the fishes reaction to a big floppy natural even though it will be 'attached' to a hook & trail nylon / fluorocarbon etc. Incidentally I have built up a gallery of large Bream caught fairly on the fly (green buzzer) in the last 3-4 years, this years best???? No scales but I have pics, estimate, I would not like to say but Grahams latest is probably bigger.
Fortunately, casting will be limited or be 'bow & arrow' style but I hope to further apply the knowledge gained

Regards & thanks to all

Ray, white marabou lures cast out and allowed to sink infront of carp work well. Also, Walkers Mayfly Nymph, fished anytime, will catch them.

Large daddy long legs or sedge patterns fished drifting on the surface will too.

I have seen them taking buzzers, but since the hook would have to be a 16...i think it would be straightened to easily.

Rob - the marabou imitating sinking bread flake perhaps?, that really is an interesting idea!. The Walkers; normal Trout size, retrieve figure of 8 with short pulls?.
I love the idea of the Daddy or Sedge.

I was thinking of buzzers as I've caught most Coarse fish on them, single or Team do you think?. what about the takes get fish up & stalk or fish blind & watch the line?

The initial fish i'm thinking of learning on are small reverted commons no more the 3-4lb so i think the Kamasan B175 would be more then adequate strength wise. I intend to progress though!!.

Thanks to all for the input

Ray, the marabou "fly" came about because of people feeding the ducks, and me seeing carp taking the sinking flake underneath them! I spot cruising fish and try and drop the fly a few feet infront. Its a very visual way of fishing.

Walkers nymph I do the same....size 8, and give it a few wee twitches as the Carp approaches...a bit like fishing for bone fish!!

If u do try buzzers, I think I would stick with one fly, just incase you accidently foul hook the fish with a second fly....

I have seen them caught on small lures like Polystickles etc, but that rare.

Dry fly has got to be the most exciting though. Bit difficult to loose feed Sedges though...the buggers fly off..lol

Good luck, please let me know how u get on.

Rob - Thought so you, facny us great 'anglers' taking advantage of the wee fishies stupidity ;-)

The future waters will not be clear, hence the need for advice.

Buzzers - Good point (sorry bad pun!)

yep, thats why I was excited but....... buzzers fished in an imative way..... too slow for most, but compared to sitting / laying for days for fish as carp fishing can be seems positively active:) )

Sedges!, here in the expensive & exclusive Sarf we have tame uns that do our bidding regardless of cost too themselves, Lions led by Donkey's.

Will do mate, but I fear winters touch.
