Barbel rods

I refer to my question posted earlier: At presentI am looking for a new barbel rod.What I Want is a rod with a bit of "beef" in the butt section capable of bullying fish away from snags but with a built in quiver.I know I can just fish off the rod end but I like that early warning You get from a quiver. Any suggestions or recommendations.

I have used a Drennan 13ft IM8 Heavy Feeder for several years now and have found it to be well up to the task in varying rates of flow.

Try a Daiwa 11/13ft CNXL PQ Feeder Rod,sensitive yet plenty of power in the bottom section,and reasonably cheap now at atound ?109.

i got my rods from Ashford Tackle in Kent they have them made up exclusivly. they are build on Harrison blanks in either 1 1/2 Ib TC or 1 3/4 Ib TC and at either 12' or 12' 6" all with Fuji lined rings and great value at ?89. If I need something lighter I use a Mitchel heavy feeder.

Eddie, I have been using a Leeda Duo Barbel rod with two tips recently and had success with it, best of all its cheap.

The type of rod you need will ultimately depend on the river you fish, the method you use and the reel/line strength you require. Best of luck.....

Eddie, it was worth a try, but on a more serious note, what sets these rods apart from say the spirit specialist or even the shimano specialist, both of which have had some reasonable reviews in the angling press.

Wurzel... I see your trying to muscle in on my scrounging reputation!!. Nice try mate but Eddie and Graham are both hardened to this approach, must be all those years eating coal ). But seriously, I had my first session with my new 'paid for' Daiwa barbel rod last week and will say I'm pretty happy so far. It certainly feels up to the job although I haven't fooled any whiskers on it yet - the chub liked it though. The blank is thicker than my previous 11' Daiwa specialist avon, which put me off at first but I soon got used to it. My only complaint is the stupid position of the sight ring on the quiver for attaching your isotope. Get any slack in the line on the cast and it jumps strait over it. Absolute pain in the b*** which will be removed at the next opportunity. I know Ringo's Stradic suffers the same problems, why they don't whip it above the second eye on the quiver I don't know... Any one else having this problem?.

Thats the only criticism I've got. I will probably take mine off and have a go at whipping one over the second ring as well. An idea i was told was ,if you get a Map Pin (the long ones),flatten the pin part with a hammer then bend it at 90 degrees as close to the coloured head of the pin as you can,and whip that on your silicone tubing for the isotope will never come off.

It's the same problem with most of the rods I've used, including those from Pulse Direct. A temporary answer is to keep the silicon tube on the ring. It doesn't stop it altogether but it doesn't happen as often. But as Chris said, the best answer is remove it and re-whip it over the top of the second ring and then there is no 'loose' line to jump over.

It's interesting to see that you've had the same problems with the sight rings... What amazes me is that problems like this aren't picked up during the design phase of a rod?. I remember you commented that Merv Wilkinson had some input on the rod design, well if he did he cant have used the quiver section for long!. Like you I've also seen other manufacturers use the same design/ring position so I assume people just don't complain. I'll try fitting the plain length of silicon before re-whipping it to see if this helps, as I don't really want to have to start 'modifying' a new rod - I.M.O. you shouldn't have to when you've forked out ?130!. I'll also email, or phone, Daiwa (info@daiwasports.co.uk / 01698 357512) and see if they have any comments to make... -Artful-

I believe Bob Roberts had most to do with designing (or at least approving the design of) the rod.

i dont think merv had any input into the rod other than telling his own customers the whereabouts of the last isotope surviving in a 100 mile radius of coventry!!!!! i've just had him on the phone he sends regards to eddie and graham.

Does anyone have any advice over a good rod for barbel fishing. I am after a model that will cope from touch legering with a swan shot to chucking a large feeder out to hit and hold tactics in snaggy swims. The choice out there is bewildering!!
