Depending on the size of fish on offer, I would loosefeed small pellet with possibly a little hemp added and fish a banded slightly larger pellet over the top.

What Rik says is spot on...as usual :eek:), but also worth a try is cockles fished over the pellet.

Luncheon meat is also a good standby...

Don't go with too many baits and chop and change every 15 minutes....build up your swim by loose feeding the pellets every couple of minutes...just 10 or so at a time, but keep it going in. Hopefully, as the fish feed harder, then increase your feed.

Above all, have confidence that your bait WILL work...good luck

Wendy, banding is a way of mounting the pellet. Basically its a wee band thats attached to your hook, and the pellet is trapped inside it. U can also use a large float rubber. John Roberst and Fox both do pre made bands.

U can get all sorts of flavours, but Trout Pellets are as good as any in my book...in 9mm sizes.

Feed two swims...one in the middle, one by the reeds and swap between then. Keep feeding both swims though.

Wendy,
You could use maggots for the carp as well, just put more of them on a larger hook and loose feed as suggested by Rob & Carp Angler, fire in a couple of pouch or hand fulls to get some food on the bottom then small amounts regularly. If you catch smaller fish to begin with the activity of these fish will help attract the carp which in turn will force the smaller fish out. Pellets & hemp are both good as any unused can be kept for next time. :-}~

Wendy,
It depends on the size of fish you are going to catch, I think a size 12 or 14 maybe even a 10 would be a safer choice as carp have big gobs. The hook size should match your bait as the pelletts come in differant sizes, I would try using some soft hook pellets as well because you can cut them to size easily and they can be side mounted like sweetcorn. :-}~

Matthew,
Does the alarm sound or does the line just move around in front of the rod?

Wendy,
You are very welcome; "dumb" not at all, everyone needs help at some point especially in this sport, I've been fishing for over 20 years and still find questions to ask. No one knows everything but between us all we know a little bit more. Good luck at the weekend and let us know how you get on. :-}~

Personally Wendy I think that the photo that you have in your sitting room on the wall in the yellow frame with flowers around it would be a better one what says you. You can always E-Mail me privately if you want.:eek:}
