Been reading a few books articles etc on lure fishing and the general view seems to be that you braid is better suited to this type of fishing.

Again excuse my ignorance but will the knots i have been using to attach mono to my traces work with braid ?

If not whats the best way to attach braid to a trace/swivel etc ?

I use a 6 turn Grinner knot on my braid. I will use superglue on the knot for attaching lure traces as they take some punishment when lobbing out jerkbaits etc.

You need different knots to keep its strength.

Grinner or uni-knots are the best, also pass it twice through the swivel, ring or whatever to give it extra strength.

Get your braid from a sea fishing mag - half the price.

Fireline 30lb for drifter fishing, 20lb for most live & deadbaiting; 30lb Whiplash for trotting/legering.

I use braid from Andico for lure angling, in 30 and 60 pound test. For general piking I use 30 pound Fireline, and for drifting I use 20 pound fireling in yellow.

Power Pro is absolutely stunning braid.
Ask Gary Knowles about its abrasion resistence on the St. Lawrence this year.

Yet a lot of people claim it has zero abrasion resistance.

A lot of authors and so-called experts claim braid has poor abrasion resistence. I've always found completely the opposite with Fireline - I reckon it's twice as tough as mono.

I don't think it knackers rings but it does grate and creak a bit, which can be a bit wierd until you get used to it.

One thing you have to watch is snagging - sure, you can pull yourself out of most snags or straighten ther hooks on them without snapping off.

But you can't just point the rod at the snag, tighten up and pull because you'll either bend the spindle of the reel or bed the braid in.

Wrap 10 or 15 turns around a nakstick or something and pull with that.

Ah, I see.
You're talking about braid in general.
Power Pro is amazingly abrasion resistant and hasn't been seen much in this country.
I have never seen any reviews of it by any of the 'experts', perhaps Mr Knowles may put finger to keyboard and enlighten us all.

Thanks for all the comments chaps.

From the comments both fireline and Power Pro would be worth trying

One question power pro who manufactures it and does anyone know where i can buy some ?

Also cheap Fireline @ Gerry's of Morecombe (24.99), who are also doing 300yds of Whiplash for 22.99 - this is an ultra thin braid that might not be to everyone's taste.

Some comments on Power pro from some people that use it.
here
<a href=http://freespace.virgin.net/dave.lumb/Writings/power.html">and Dave Lumb</a>
who also sells it.
But if you ring Rob Thompson on
01590 612608 I'm sure he will be able to beat Dave Lumbs price.

Rik,

Could you make head or tail of what they were on about..?

It's certainly low dia. I was fishing with a guy using the 30lb on Sat and it was quite a bit thinner than the 20lb Fireline I was using.

I'm after a half-decent sinking braid - anyone got any ideas..?

If you understand Americans and how they fish then it makes good sense.

People see the Americans as behind us when it comes to skill in fishing, but they have been lure fishing and using braid for many, many years and most of them certainly now what's what.
