  1. After The Rain Has Fallen

Four or five weeks ago I treated myself to a seven-day fishingbreak in mid-September, This was to coincide with meeting up with some friendson the River Wye near Ross. I endured Gales, floods and menacing eastern Europeans;I had a few chub and barbel but it wasn’t quite what I had planned. Four weekslater my wife and I had a trip planned to Welshpool where we were going to havea couple of days on the upper Severn BAA waters. Believe it or not we drovethrough gales and heavy rain which put the ...

  2. Welcome to my Nightmare

About a month ago I went on an annual, three day, barbel fishing hol with my usual cronies, Micky and Glen. We re-visited the River Severn between Bridgenorth and Bewdley, and stayed in The George for a couple of nights. The river was very low again, and the fishing was incredibly hard; I had checked out the admirable BAA web site and discovered that there were about ten matches on that stretch on Sunday so we hunted around and found a spot at Knowle Sands where there were plenty of swims - but ...

  3. Low

I Went to fish the River Severn at Bewdley with my mates last Sunday (05/09) for three days of splendid barbel fishing. Micky’s friend, Stanley, had been fishing the previous week and said that the water was very low and the fishing was hard, which dampened spirits a bit. I didn’t know what to expect but we had discussed tactics and decided that we needed to scale things up a bit from our normal River Swale 1oz and 1½oz feeders and leads. I acquired some 2oz and 2½oz knobbled in-line feeders ...

  4. Cold Turkey

I haven’t fished a river since the season started, and before that I only managed a couple of hours on the Wensum when all our still-water options were frozen solid! I’m suffering cold turkey. The local commercials are okay but I find them very frustrating. Don’t the fish know they’re there for our entertainment? They should be queuing up to be caught, but never for me.

    I needed a fix!

I planned to visit my 93 year old Mum who’s in a home in Leeds, I hadn’t seen ...

  5. Too Darn Hot

Last Wednesday, the day England stumbled into the last sixteen of the World Cup, I returned to the small lake where I have vowed to catch a double figure carp. Whilst driving there I listened to the match on the Radio, England scored, which I considered a good omen.

It was a hot, still afternoon. The lake was covered in a dusty film; there was one other angler who I decided not to disturb. For the first time this year I was focussed on fishing. I tackled up my one rod, a 1½lb TC Fox ...
