Which Reel For Barbel

Iam going to be fishing for Barbel on the River Teme.I have just purchased a Fox 1.75 Barbel rod and want some advice on what reel would be best to use for this type of Fishing.

It depends on how much you want to spend Mick....on the Teme i use one of the small Daiwa emblems (not the big bucket type!) the clutch is superb...on a par with the old Abu54, but they are expensive, the Shimano range would be my next choice.

I've a Fox 1.5tc, it's teamed with a Shimano 4000 Super GTM . Balances well and very well engineered. I use it on the Teme with 10lb line without problems. No complaints.

I also have a fox barbel plus. I use a shimano 5010 with. The nexus 5000 is the current model of course. The baitrunner facility is very handy for when you have to turn your back or put your jacket on, which, by sods law, is when the barbel are most likely to try and pull your nice new rod into the river.

Er, yeah. You do have make sure your line isn't wrapped round your rod rest even with the baitrunner on, don't you Skive? Otherwise it still arcs beautifully into the middle of the river doesn't it Skive? Takes your brand new nexus and a lovely Harrison rod with it doesn't it Skive? LOL.

just in case it's a centre pin you would like to use, instead of a souless fixed spool reel,I would recomend a Swallow.

Hi,was your last comment about the centre pin reel? If it was, I use a pin for legering. I don't even own a float.
I only use a fixed spool reel when I am really desperate.

I like to use a pin when freelining or fishing close in-its nice playing them and you have good control over letting the line go with that sudden surge.
but it is a tad difficult putting a feeder to the far bank of the Severn or Dove with a wallis cast....unless your name happens to be Alan Roe of course......

I would like to know from Allan Marshall what is soulless about a fixed spool reel?

If you don't own a float Allan, what do you use for long trotting - with your centrepin of course?

Pins are very good when slowing down a float when fishing off the rod tip.
If the situation doesn't demand that, then I fish with the equipment that is suitable for the job.

Anything other than margin work or trotting doesn't necessitate a pin.

To class fixed spool reels as soul-less is a very Ludditesque and blinkered attitude.

Coops is quite correct, what ever you use make sure your line is not wrapped around the rest even with the baitrunner on. Yes he is also correct that I lost my favorite rod and a brand new baitrunner whilst my attention had been diverted. The last i saw of it was the whole lot doing a swan dive into the Teme. This is much to the ammusement of my fellow anglers who will not let me forget it. But I will have my day.

I use the 6 series batrunner which I find eaasy to use which is coupled to a Fox 1.75 barbel plus.

Shimanos 5010 Aero GT baitrunner, or the old Aero 4010 GTM, both cracking reels..

Not a bad rod, but NW is a lot better, for a start it can swim at a rate of knots and glide through the air like a polaris.

5010 Baitrunner.
Fish it with the baitrunner on. You get a lovely run then!
Engage and play off the clutch.
All the top kiddies are on Baitrunners and Fox Barbel rods.
Soulless fixed spools?
How can you not own a float and condemn another practise as souless?

i use a shimano sedona gte4000, good clutch and fighting drag system ( had to call upon that once or twice this season! )

i got mine cheap - only 34 quid from index superstore place in northampton.
i use this with 10lb giant mainline and at the moment 1.25 tc rod, soon to be replaced by one of them stef horak gt ouse 1.75 tc rods.
