There is a cracking argument going on on another website about whether drinking is OK when carp fishing.
What do you think?
I personally do not drink on the bank, but I have a smoke.
I have had lots of long sessions ruined by drinkers, though, banging about, laughing etc.
However I do not have a problem with someone having a few QUIETLY-as long as they are in control. I have seen lots of anglers carry on fishing while blatently out of it, though. Not good for fish welfare.

must admit I often used to drink on the bank, but would never drink to excess and risk harming the fish or disturb any other angler, you can have a drink without causing a riot, in moderation, and with common sense, no problem.

This is one of those questions that has to be qualified, ie, where, when, how much, etc.

I regularly drink on the bank when I'm not driving, carrying a hip flask of whisky to add to tea, coffee, etc. I even enjoy a glass of wine and the odd can of beer.

What I don't do is cause anyone or anything any harm, or force anyone else to share my pleasure.

I don't even buy anyone else a drink, just in case they don't agree with it......

Is there a problem though?
Imagine a teenager haveing one too many and starts to lark about. Or even just having a couple of cans.
If it is a club owned water, could the club be held responsible for any accidents that may happen on their waters? Maybe not legally I don't know, but morrally yes. things have a way of getting out of hand.
In any case it wouldn't look too good on the club concerned would it? Bad publicity.
How do we know that people drink when on certain waters? I think we all know the answer to that one.
But pull anybody up over it, and its allways the same. I take my cans home with me.

Lymm Angling Club have banned all booze on all waters. It is also strictly enforced. One of the bailiffs on Lymmvale has eyes like a hawk and can spot a lager can from 100 yards. I have no problem with it.

A little story......a few years ago I used to go to stay at a caravan site, Lowfields, with my ex. Her Dad owned a caravan there.
I was dying to night fish there as I really took the place apart for carp. She agreed to it as long as we went out for the night first.
So I ended up night fishing after a skinful of booze. It was a bloody nightmare. I was getting runs too and after two fish, several falls on the slippy bank and a near-disaster - I nearly fell into deep water and suspect that would have been me dead - I reeled in and slept it off. Never again.

Carping, by its very nature, can often be a sociable thing! Bivvied up for a day, two days, or several days! Often on waters where a couple of fish per year are a result!

In this situation, fishing with friends, what better to while away the hours by sharing in a beer or three!

I will regularly drink 4, 5 or even 6 cans of beer over several hours, and I know that I am fully in control!

I have been in situations where several of us who know each other have reeled in and gathered for a social. I have sometimes had too many, but on such occasions, I will NOT attempt to cast out, I always have, and always will just sleep it off! I never get really drunk anyhow!

As has been previously stated, it is very much a question of different situations dictating what may happen on the day!

Nothing wrong, in my opinion, with having a few beers whilst remaining fully capable of fishing safely - both for self, others, and the fish.

Nothing like a beer or a scotch as the sun goes down. But not on the banks of the Trent.

It's outrageous; I never drink on the bank as I feel this to be totally irresponsible. That?s both here or abroad!

Right Wol? Rik? ? Couldn?t imagine it could you?

We live in a so called free society so like everything else as long as it does not bother or harm the fish or any one else there is no harm in having a occasional smoke or drink.

When we talk of having an occasional smoke, I assume it is of the whacky backy sort.
Like blunderer, I am mainly talking of waters that are deep.
Appart from that, it does set a bad example for the younger generation of anglers (Like Stuart)
If you want to drink, then go to the pub.
If you want to sleep then get off home, you are not fishing.

So, you are saying no drink whatsoever then Baz?

Is that because you don't?

Baz, I fish, I socialise, I enjoy, in fact I help out here as much as I can to set an example via my thinking and sharing my progress.

With regard to setting an example to younger anglers re drinking then that aint my problem. How can it be if I am happy to have a drink on the lakeside. I'll let you burn the martyr on that one!

Nothing like a beer or 6 when bivvied up for a day or two especialy in the warmer months, with a mate or not!!
I never get drunk and don't disturb anybody or leave a mess, and fish care and welfare is always top priority.

Stuart/ Malcolm,
My last two sentences in my second posting, were added for a bit of spice.
There's nothing better than a can or two with the lads when bivvied up, it makes for a good social event.
I almost fell for youre comment Stuart, saying it was outragious, hahahaha.

Having read your comments it seem that there is little or no regard to the fact that when you leave the fishery and get into you cars for the journey home you may still be over the limit, what would you do if you were pulled over and found to be over the limit and you loose you licence , possibly your job , then you home because you are not working to pay the mortage, is the drink on the bank really worth the risk , but then agaian it will never happen to you will it? and before you ask No! I do not drink I am Teetotal.
