Hi all,

I don't do a lot of carp fishing but I've been doing a bit more of late and was thinking about getting a carp rod. At the moment I have a 12ft Drennan Pellet Waggler, a 12ft Shakespeare Mach II feeder (3 quiver tips) and a Wychwood Tri-tip barbel that goes up to 2tc.

Most of the carp I've been catching so far are anything from pasties to high doubles. Largest I've had has been a 16lber and that was on the Shakespeare but the lakes I fish can hold up to say 30lb or so.

I have a shimano Baitrunner and a couple of entry alarms (not used the alarms yet) but can anyone recommend a fairly entry level carp rod that would handle fish up to about 30lb?

I tend to fish fairly open swims but also quite like stalking the margins.

Thanks

As you say you mainly fish open swims and enjoy some stalking then save yourself some money as a barbel rod is quite adequate. The original carp rods were often 1.7 or 2lb tc anyway.
It may be that you want to fish an alarm set up with 2 rods then there are so many entry level rods in the brochures by the big names that you can't really go wrong with any of them. Just don't be tempted to go for a too powerful job for the type of water you describe as it will spoil the pleasure.

Any carp rod should be able to handle a thirty pounder perfectly well, regardless of the test curve rating. The choice of a rod should come down to the methods employed (PVA bagging etc) and the distances you are going to be casting. There's no point in buying a carp rod (which are hard to find at less than 2.75lb TC these days) if you are fishing light leads with relatively short casts. Your 2lb barbel rod will cope with that without any problems. It'll be beefy enough to handle any of the fish you are likily to catch.

I would too. :)

Likewise... :)

I actually prefer using my 2lb test barbel rods, if I'm on a smallish water where the chances of a 20lber is low and in all honesty the chances of getting a 30lb+ carp are at best slim.

A 2lb barbel rod is up to being coupled with 12lb line and perfectly capable of being used to subdue a 30lb carp.

Have a look at The Tackle Box Quest rods. They are on offer at under £50 at the moment.

You could always buy a used rod.

You can often get rods that were top of the range a couple of years ago for around the same price as new budget rods.

I'm with everybody else. What you've got is perfectly adequate for a bit of fun/not too specialised/serious carping. I think I'd try what you've got first before splashing out....you might find you dont like "proper" carping or that the rods you already have are fine.

However....if you DID decide you wanted a "real" carp rod I'd certainly recommend looking at these.

The 11 footer is a terrific little rod and even a confirmed non carper like me was very, very tempted.

Thanks again everyone. I'm not casting out too far...perhaps 30 yards or so. Methods are a mixture of cage, pellet, method feeders, plus I'm going to start using pva with leds. Nothing heavy and certainly not what you would describe as serious carping. I'll stick with what I have unless something happens where I feel I'm under-gunned.
