Hello Chaps
I thought I'd start off with this as my first thread :)

Game Changers
There haven't really been many significant game changers over the years for me, the hair rig, the invention of the boilie, a bit before my time, but these I would regard as titled above.

So which items have made a detrimental affect on your fishing?
Which items have been real game changers for you?

The big game changer for me is the over proliferation of a single species at the expense of all others, specimen Tench and Bream venues loaded with carp, and the former residents removed, sad, i love carp fishing but as the Aldi advert says, ialso love Tench, Bream, Barbel, Roach and Rudd, just as much, it used to be a significant event if you landed a sizeable carp but now, depending on the venue its easy. The upside is the tackle innovations made, my rods , although i have gone through many, are a pleasure to use, same goes for indicators and mainlines, what next that is the question, heard a bit on the radio about some yanks that have invented a rod that senses vibration 40 times a second and phones you if you get a bite.

Although poles are not a new invention by any means, modern poles have certainly changed the game as far as match fishing is concerned.

I agree with this, I've been trying to find a decent puddle with a decent stocking of tench all season which is local and apart from horcott which is 25 quid a day, I've found none ?

There
1. Being retired and have more time to fish. It hurts sometimes when I think of past lost opportunities.

2. No mortgage therefore able indulge more tackle and not worry about fuel/travelling costs.

3. A decent local tench water with only a dozen members.

Just re read the original post and realised I missed the point. Items/gadgets DOH......My new barrow extends things for me somewhat.

It has to be the match man hooktyer for me. I'd really struggle having to go back to tying hooks by hand.

For me personally over the last twenty years or so it would be the huge variety of specialist chairs with their adjustable legs etc, with my back I really couldn't imagine fishing from a seat box or anything similar for any length of time.

100% in agreement, being uncomfortable usually results in a short trip.

I think the availability of information via things like the web has been a game changer as its made it a far more level playing field than before.

Anyone can now become a very competent angler in a short amount of time. Its become as much about keeping one step ahead of other anglers as it is the fish.

Decent monofilament line - something we take for granted now, but lines were pretty poor once. Now we have floating ang sinking lines, high and low stretch versions, abrasion resistant nylon and near-invisible fluorocarbon lines. Also Nanofil-style lines and the now ubiquitous braid. Lines have come a long way since Sylcast was the best mono in the shop*.

* In our local shop, anyway.

For me it would be when Kryston brought out Silkworm braid to use as carp hooklengths instead of Dacron. Although now there are loads of different braids, I even remember trying dental floss for hooklengths (hopeless - both me and dental floss).

Water proofs for me, they have changed the wet days fishing no end.

Long gone are the days of roving round soaking wet, or moving a brolly from peg to peg to stay dry.

The warmth of the clothing has also become a game changer in the winter.

Rods,Reels and Poles are a given for all of us i would have thought, along with line.

When I started fishing people mainly fished the river, elastics only went to no 8! Line was pretty poo too!

I think main game changers I've seen have been;

Carbon advancements who'd of thought poles would go to 19m?
Pole pots
Boxes/seats you can get level and comfortable anywhere now
PVA - brilliant pure brilliant
Method feeders, putting big weights in the capabilities of the average angler
Rod rings, when I watered they were rings of metal that frayed and cut your line!!

Sure I've missed loads but those are the few that stand out to me. I started fishing mid 80's

Yes pulla bungs, simple idea but such a difference they made, I remember waving 6 sections in the air

I suppose Stotz have been a game changer for a lot of people, who struggle to put fine shot on the line...personally i cant stand them, but must admit they are easier to put on ,,,,,i tend to only use them as trimming shot on the bank on my pole rigs..Gazza

The invasion of carp into almost every puddle that will support life has changed fishing for the worst .

Other than that Line has improved no end apart from i still cant find a line that sinks they way i want it to .

God I've seen so many over the years, I started fishing with a lump of wood and brass for a reel and worrying if my rod had any weevils in ! I'll never forget my first rod breaking because of those little critters!!!! I was guttered I can see it now in my minds eye.

Glass was a brilliant game changer as carbon years later
Nylon line - if anyone on here remembers using gut they will know what poo line was!!
Plastic getting rid of those useless wicker baskets

There's simply too many to mention my post would be a essay, fishing is not even recognisable to the sport it was when I started fishing many many moons ago.
