I've been carp fishing more this year because of the poor state of the rivers. I prefer surface fishing as you can see what's going on.

I've found that when carp suck in hard baits such as floating boilies or Sonubaits Oiy floaters, most of the time I don't connect on the strike. I've tried side hooking, pellet bands and hair rigs, and none of these rigs seem to be that effective. I'm using a 10 hook with 10/11 mm baits.

I've noticed today that fishing a soft bait - small pieces of floating crust - is a lot better because I don't miss many of the takes. It must be that the hook is concealed in the bread, and the soft texture doesn't mask the hook.

Has anybody any views on this please?
