After a weekend night fishing, my gas stove has used 2 canisters up, I am after a coleman stove and would like some feedback to how good they are, i have been looking at the sportster and the 442 and would also like to know how good they burn on unleaded fuel.

I've got the 522 sportster  I think, top bit of kit mate, they run on unleaded or you can buy the Colemans fuel at about 5 times the price! Just use normal unleaded and put a squirt of red-ex in the petrol at the correct ratio (I put it straight into the gallon container). a full fill up will last me about 2-3 days.

You can always get a Kelly Kettle, I normally take mine as a back up.

Hope this helps.

I never had a problem with mine, even in very low temperatures where a gas stove will sometimes not even light.

That said, I gave up on it as I wasn't happy with the petrol smell on my hands as I think it taints baits.

I ended up buying a Sunngas twin burner which has been excellent, even in the colder months.

The trick with colemans is to make sure you have got plenty of pressure before you start to get a nice clean burn. Running the stoves on unleaded is no problems but I add a little redx to the fuel to minimize clogging the transfer tube.
Apart from that I love mine and have never had any problems with mine that a service would not ifx.

You can pick up a sportster from Argos for under £35. I now use a Coleman exponent (seperate burner and fuel bottle).

As Ian suggests, ensure it's pressurised (pumped up) before trying to light them and contrary to instructions don't turn on full blast to light and you'll have no problem.

Depending on use I might run a tin of Coleman fiel through once a season.

You'll never go back to gas.

I hated mine, it gave off unburned fuel after it was extinguished. I was never sure if I had petrol on my hands.

Three of used to fish together we all had colemans. One was found to have the burner plates installed wrong. The other had problems with a valve. All three were bought new and problems existed from day one.

From the reviews that i have read, the problems seem to have existed with the older colemans pre 2000. I think im going to order a feather 442 colemans as it has feet on the bottom and is considerably smaller than a sportster.

Thanks Everyone for you help.

Like others have said, they are problematic and I had one 10 years. Washers going, generator blocking, leading to seepage running down the reservoir and catching fire. I once finished up having to boot the bar Steward into the lake in the dark for fear of thing blowing up

I must have gone through 20 generators over the 10 years and it was a relief when it died a death.
I now have a Primus Eta Power multi fuel, not cheap, but it burns anything that's liquid and flammable!
Here's the list Ive burnt in it
Petrol
Paraffin
Gas
Meths
Diesel
Veg oil, bit hard to get it going though
Turps
White spirit
It should be noted only the top 3 are listed by the makers for use.

I agree with the lead free + redex for the Colemans, much cheaper than the branded Coleman fuel - good for smelting lead to make leger weights, haven't bought a leger for years now - a good job for a cold Sunday morning

If you want a stove for fishing then gas is, in my opinion the only option.

If you are into scouting or high altitude/low temp then that is the time to look at other options.

I have tried them all over the years and nothing but nothing is as easy as gas for general non specialist use.
