Mine is a Browning, 13' two and a quarter pound T/C 3 piece rod.

It picks up line off of the surface beautifully and has a lovely playing action as well as casting with ease.

It must be all of 10 years old by now, but I've not found a better rod to replace it with.

You don't give any info on how far you want cast, or what size of fish you are targeting.

For carp to mid double, and a casting weight of up to 20grams I would recommend either a 1lb test curve avon rod or a good float rod (my shimano hyperloop ax 390 fa is superb for this) or maybe a pellet waggler rod like the drennan puddle chucker. I am using 12 and 13 foot rods 'cause that's what I got, but you might find a 10 or 11 foot more suitable for your venue.

depends on where you are fishing as sagalout has said

one place I surface fish a spinning rod that is about 9 or 10 ft (not sure) will cast to he fish on a small water - this lenght is better for moving between swims thro the trees

I use a longer rod if I need to cast to fish at other places where they are further from the bank

12ft Avon with a 1.25tc does me fine. Coupled with a suitable sized reel (4000/5000) and it's a great set-up in all but the snaggiest of swims.

Avon 11'6"" does me fine in open snaggless swims but I go to a 12' x 1.75 TC jobbie in snaggy water or where biigger fish might be found.....

.....might be worth enlarging on what you are after/water type etc etc as others have said....too many factors to be more specific!!

As those above have already said, it depends on the fishing circumstances. I use any of about 5 different rods for surface work varying from a 1lb tc to 2.25 tc in 11 or 12 foot.

If I had to choose just one it would probably be the Fox 11ft 1.75tc Controller but then most of my surface fishing isn't done at range.

Mine's a custom Sportex 12ft 1½lbs (approx), but I sometimes use an Abu 2½lbs or just my Harrison 11½ft 1bs 10ozs barbel rod (but I don't tell the carp that).

Thanks guys!!!

The venue I surface fish 'most' is a fairly large, tree lined, lake with an island in the middle. It holds carp 5lb to 35lbs.

So judging from your advice I'm gonna need something in the region of a 2lb to 2.25lbtc, to keep the them out of the snags close in. Also, about 10ft to be able to cast a long hooklength without snagging the overhead branches.

Any suggestions.........?!

I have a 10ft Shimano Forcemaster spinning rod that will cast up to 50g. I will give that a go on smaller, less snaggy waters.

Cheers again!
