Gents, I'm getting my head round this Barbel fishing lark, not caught one yet but not really given them a decent go... I'm gonna need a Baitdropper to get some decent hemp down... what do you go for any better than others ? and technique advice ?? or do i just swing the fella out...

anymore than a couple of rodlengths gets diffucult unless you have a spod rod.
underarm preferably-and not to near snags or it gets expensive. I use a drennan one, but they are pretty much a standard set up and price I think.
looked after they last til you lose em......
but they are invaluable!!!!

They are a doddle to make, empty S+K pudding tin, cable ties, welding rod (flux free!) and a lead weight......buy one first to see how they work and then......make em!

I must admit to finding bait droppers difficult to
use anything much over a rod length out especially
if the area has a decent flow to it.Fill the thing
too much it tightens internally against the bait
inside and can be difficult to get the bait to
release and you end up trying to bounce the thing
around on the bottom trying to hit the release
trigger!!.fill the thing not enough and the bait
releases its self before it hits the bottom
sending a stream of bait downstream!!.
I often bait the swim using the large 2.5 ounce
bockend swimfeeder repeating casting to the same
spot for up to half an hour!!.I am often very
suprised how quickly the first bite comes to the
baited hook dispite half an hours bombardment.
Practice i am sure makes perfect but for me
anything much over a rod length out i put the baitdropper
dropper away.My experiences come from fishing our
two more wilder powerfull rivers the Wye and
Severn. Smaller heavily fished rivers may not
tollerate a feeder bombardment but i would
certainly give it a go..

Check out the Maver range they have a series of sizes from small to one holding the best part of half a pint of hemp. You'll need a stout rod for the biggie but less disturbance from a couple of put in's with this than several with a small one.

I also struggle for consistency with a baitdropper more than a rod length. I have been using Korda's pva bag system, can't remember the name ! As long as you use pellets, maggots etc it is fine.

was thinking about pva bags too... reckon with a pebble in they would sink on the spot....
