My 11 yr old son has just started fishing and enjoys both float and ledger fishing. With his birthday fast approaching I have agreed to buy him a new rod.Does anybody have any suggestions as to what make, type etc I should be looking at.Obviously I don't want to spend a fortune but am looking for something that will last him a few years.Suggestions??

Shaun,
The first rod i let my nipper use was a 12ft float, thats the shortest i would get, there are some terrific bargains about but i would expect decent rods to be ?40+....look for models that have been discontiued, some real bargains can be had.
I like the action of Shimano but others are also good.
As a kid i had to use my float rod as a light ledger too but if poss i would buy him a rod specificaly for it.....these can be picked up cheaper still.

I agree with what Paul as said. I have two young lads about the same age as you. I kitted them out throgh WMAC. Very resonable and very helpfull. Try www.wmac.co.uk. I can not remember there phone number.

Start him off witha float rod....there is generaly more to do with float fishing than a ledger..or how about a whip or a small pole ?

Just my 2p

Shaun, as you may have seen I have had my own rod adventures. One of them was helping out an 11 year old at end of road. He's now decided he wants a carp rod (don't they all?).
I did come across a rod called the Leeda 12 ft Twin Tip specialist ?36.99 (float & quiver) in Hounslow Angling. From what I was told it would do 3lb - 8lb line. From what I saw it appeared to be just the job as masses of flexibility.

Shaun,
Shakespeare do great range of low chost, high quality (Iwould say cheap but it gives the wrong impression)rods and a lot of shops sell them heavily discounted. WMAC as already suggested are also offering VFM tackle, they also do combos which have a reel to match the rod you buy.

Shaun,
I've just had the same thing with my 7 year old. I found that a couple of carp rods that I have are too long from the real seat to the base of the butt, making it really hard for him to move the rod around his body when casting. I have just bought a 12" Abu float road for less than ?35 which he finds a lot easier to use. I think the main thing is that you take him with you and that he tries out the basic tasks - it will avoid the expensive mistake of buying a rod that will only end up being a 'poor fit'. Good luck anyway and I hope your son enjoys fishing as much as my boy does :)

you could have a look at the john wilson avon/quiver rods, ok the avon top might be a bit heavy for float fishing, ok for bigger fish on the float but the quiver section makes it a great all round leger rod from roach to barbel it is great and very sensitive, i'm gonna go and dig the quiver section out of the barn ready for winter chubbing.

cheers Dan

I started mine off with cheap whips - fiver a time from the local shop - and maggots on tiny hooks.

I found they could grasp this straight away and the tackle needed didn't break the bank.

We just went down the marsh creeks and caught trout, eels, rudd etc.
