Favourite Chub Hook

What is your Favourite Hook pattern for when you are fishing for Chub ?

I suppose there might be one for Float and one for Ledger ........ perhaps the same hook for both ?

All depends on what bait I'm using, river conditions and size of fish I'm expecting to catch.

If I'm float fishing or legering with small baits like caster and maggot I'll use either Kamasan Animal spade end barbless (depending on size of fish expecting to catch) or Mustad Crystal Chub. Both small but very strong hooks.
Usually use the above hooks in size 16 or 18.

If I'm legering or bolt rigging with paste, boilies or meat then I'll use either Partridge Jack Hilton Z1 Carp Hooks, Drennan Continental Boilie hooks or Drennan Barbel hooks. Sometimes I might use also use Drennan Super Specialist hooks. Nearly always use a size 6 in the above hooks but these days I'm leaning towards a lot smaller hooks. Biggest I've used so far this year is a size 10 and I've been getting more bites.

I see, now this does confuddle me a little ...... Are you using the Bigger Stronger hooks because it's to much the size of the Bait, or because the Chub will straighten a smaller lesser gauge hook ?

For 90% of my Chubbing, I use Drennan Super specialists - went stalking on friday for 2 hours and landed all 6 fish, some from very substantial swims......

If you want to select the bigger fish from a shoal -you have to be brave and use a big bait.......... Its how you present it that dictates wether they will accept it...... You can use small hooks by all means - but if you observe a small shoal of fish, the smaller individuals get their heads down very quickly and 'tail up'. The bigger fish will take a sample and move away. they never more than lightly browse. If you go small, you will in all probability catch a small one - and then that's game over.

A point worth remembering is that often the very biggest Chub live solitary lives and may be caught from swims not typically assossiated with this species -rarely seen - its just instinct and experience that will lead to their capture.

Drennan Speciment plus hooks in larger sizes are good for large meat and paste baits - anything bigger than that (well thats classified lol)!!!!

I will just add that my experiences are on small rivers - I could not vouch for these observations on the Wye or trent.

I can see what it is that you are saying Chav, but even smallish Chub have huge Mouths. I mean a 2lb Chub can easily swallow a size 4 hook, Yes the bait has to be big enough to ward off the little fish but then surely it wouldn't match the size of the hook unless you were using Aberdeen Hooks ...... not being panickity BTW i'm just trying to get a clear picture in my head.

Ah, the Picture must have come up afterwards, I use to use Kamasan B175 Trout and Salmon hooks for my Chub Fishing (to be honest i used them for my Carp Fishing) just borrowed them to go Chub Fishing, they were a great hook really strong too. Not sure if i can still get them locally.

Is that an old Tobacco Tin you're using to store them in ?

The Fish only has to pick it up and turn and if freelined they will carry on doing this and the line attached to a size 4 will cut through the meat and find the target - and thats my summer ledgering tactic. two or three biggish cubes of meat work better than one.

If you used too big a hook (aberdeens.....?????) there would be too much resistance on the strike and the fish would eject the bait before it could find a hold due to the massive force that would be required to pull all the metal work out of the meat.

Free-lining lobs and slugs, you match the hook to the size of bait and hope that the fish you visually target enhales the lot - but give the fish time - never strike immediately otherwise you pull the lot out of its mouth (should of had 7 fish on friday lol)!

I do it a lot, it has a very high sucess rate and I know these methods work on the types of rivers I fish.

Mainly Drennan SS for bottom work or free lining (If they made a barbless version of Drennan Barbel I would use that in preference) I rarely go above 10 unless free lining large baits such as crust, slugs or lobs. For float work usually an SS or Animal 12 – 18 depending on the size of bait.

I have the pleasure of fishing with some super anglers - each with a very personalised approach and each very different.

The thing with Chub is no single method is effective for chub all the time. There are no rules as such, just generalisations and individual who have perfected a technique that is useful when the conditions apply.

I think in many ways, chub are the least 'riggy' type of fish and don't require anything more than a simple coarse fishing hook - though in smaller sizes of 20 and 18, something more substantial in the wire. but saying that, my biggest chub came on a single maggot, size 20 kamasan standard pattern to 1lb16oz line.

The carp market has burst onto the scene and the types of hook are vast - because different types of presentation require different patterns. some work well for Chub, but no better than a Super Specialist type hook IMO. Chub are a simple coarse fish and require just good angling technique and patience.

Anyway - off now with some snails, lobworms and a packet of size 4 super specialists.....

Whilst we are on the Subject of Chub, whilst doing some research in to the Chub it appears that their are 2 Latin names for the same fish ?

(Squalius cephalus) and (Leuciscus cephalus) the latter of the two appearing the most common in articles i've read so far. Also, how the devil do you pronounce the Latin name ?

Is it LOOS - ISKUS SEFFALUS ?

I feel a lot more comfortable using Barbless hooks but i have no problem wiht barbed hooks, i just prefer Barbless, or a crucshed Barb if i like the Hook Pattern but it only comes in barbed.

Yep deadly serious. Brilliant for chub especially when paste fishing.

Chav Professor - Remember that wet cold and miserable day on the Gipping when me and you blanked in style while my old man caught the only two fish of the day? Jack Hilton's didn't let him down that day! Mr Chub magnet is still doing the business but these days he is targeting roach with his same laid back style.

Kamasan animals all the way for me... size 12 on a v short hair for pellets/ boilies or size 8 direct on the line for cheesepaste. And always barbless...

Same here mate. Always use barbed except in the smaller sizes and never had any problems but like you said its a confidence thing.

I have a Korum Bait and Bits bag for barbel fishing with Drennan Super specialists in it and a second bag as my chub bag with Kamasan B983's in it. Somedays I'm chub fishing and catch a barbel, others days I'm barbel fishing and catch chub. Both hooks do the business regardless of fish, should I just have one bag or the Chav Professors tabacco tin for my fishing!

There is no one hook for chub that is suitable for all situations, baits and conditions, this is why it pays to take a good selection of hooks. One day they might only be interested in maggots and you might only have large size 6 hooks which would be no good.
