Hooks

Hi all,

My favourite hooks are the Kamasan B911, B611 & B511, I've always used Kamasan Hooks for my Carp Fishing so it made sense to me to follow this transaction into my Coarse Fishing.

I like the hook hold they give me, and they have never straightened out on me and they always seem ultra sharp. I guess i just have confidence when i'm using them and it's one less thing for me to worry about when i'm at the waters edge.

It would be interesting to see what other Anglers prefer and why.

Tight Lines

I use Kamasan B560's (micro barb) a lot. They are the strongest fine gauge carbon wire hooks I've come across. They have a nice wide gape which I gives an excellent hook hold. I find the gape can stand being opened slightly - it gives a better chance of hooking and the hook hold doesn't seem to suffer. I regularly catch 3-4lb chub on them on my local river (waggler or pole) where other weaker hooks I've tried in the past have failed me.

I'vehad small Kamasans straighten on me when hooking carp I wasn't after.

Drennan super specialists are my hook of choice, for "coarse fishing" they never straighten!.

22 - 12 Drennan Super Spade (legering and float fishing for large fish)

22 - 14 Drennan Carbon Chub (if fishing light tackle for smaller species)

10 - 8 ESP Raptor (medium size baits such as boillies and luncheon meat)

6 - 4 DrennanCarbon Specimen (large baits such as cheesepaste and lobworms)

In each case the reason for choosing them is that at the sizes quotedthey are great patterns for hooking and staying put, are very sharp and reliable.

For light legering and most float fishing I too use Kamasan hooks in varying patterns depending on the target species and bait.

Heavier legering I tend to opt for the Carbon Chub pattern in sizes from 20's to 14's

That said, for legering I have a real 'passion' for the old Mustad 90340's but my stocks are now becoming very depleted

For boile baits and luncheon meat etc I also go for the ESP Raptors.

Finally for big baits, like Andy, i opt for Drennan Carbon Specimen hooks

Over the years I have tested and tried many different patterns and from every manufacturer imaginable but always seem to come back to the list above, although Preston do make some fine hooks for the pole.

Kamasan B983 black wide gape. I always stock up when I find a shop that stocks them as most will try to sell the much more expensive 'carp' hooks. Although a relative fine wire hook they were more than a match for a 14lb+ sea trout (and pike of a similar weight) I had a few years back

Kamasan (the river matchmens choice when there was such a breed) are probably the best all round hook in sizes down to 14 but for bigger fish I use the Drennan range. Neither of these makes will let you down in my long experience and Kamasan B520's were and probably still are one of the best match hooks on the market.

Kamasan are marketed by Drennan andI understandare made by the same manufacturer from the same Japanese wire as the Drennan "own brand" hooks

Blooming heck!....I think I am learning something at last!

I use Drennan size 16 and below, kamasan, anything above.

As one of those boring blokes who cant stand shopping...CANT STAND IT, I always go to M&S for stuff like clothes, so Drennan are a god send for me, the M&S of the tackle World, there stuff is quality, I love the rods, hooks and other kit...what you see is what you get, great stuff!

yep, drennan/kamasan are same

drennan used to do a 'carbon match' which was the Kamatsu B520 and a carbon barbless match which was the B521, (why did kamatsu change to kamasan ?)

i agree with GW, B520's are my favorite, 26-24's perfect for squat/pinke, 22-18's for maggot, 16s for caster/tare/small worm, 14s for corn/pellet. Never had one straighten out ( mind you, i only catch tiddlers ) and keeps a nice sharp point

I also like the barbless version, but rather than have too many different packets in the box i usualy make do with flatening the whisker barb with styl pincers

Yes, the B560 is the wide gape one. I use it on the pole with no10 white hydro elastic and also when on rod and line. I don't find its too fine for my needs, but my local river is not very fast and the biggest fish are only chub (discounting the _very_ occasional carp).

sory Jon, i deleted my post as i thought id got my code numbers wrong so yours wont make sense now !!

the one I was on about is the B511 which is a lot finer than the B560, i use this for hemp on the pole in a 18/16. Also use them for caster if i think the B520 is a bit too heavy in clear/cold water

There's an interesting article by Darren Cox in the current issue of Match Fishing about his favourite hook types. There's quite a lot of agreement between what he says and the views expressed here. I'm a Drennan/Kamasan fan, too.

Derbyshire: best beer, best cheese, best puddings.
I've got a right jumbled selection at the moment but my staples are Kamazan in smaller sizes for float fishing with smaller baits like maggot and the ESP Raptors usually in size 10 T6 pattern (shorter shank) for hair rigged boilies/pellets (10 - 12mm baits).

I have recently tried the Korum seamless hooks and Gardener Mugger hooks for larger hair rigged baits and found them to be excellent too.

Only one hook for me for big fish “Au Lion D’or” 2s. Big brutal and will pull a battleship without bending.

I’m down to my last twenty or so, so if anybody’s got any and wants rid, I’ll have off you.
