I spotted the irritating and 'anti-angling' twit(cher) Bill Oddie last night ont' telly. On his birdtable he had a blackbird hoovering up meal worms - reminded me of fishing in the USA where you just cant buy a pint of maggots.

Q.

Are meal worms any good and where can you get them? Will they cost the earth?

My guess is a reptile retailer but have not looked into this.

I bet they make a good tench bait!

funny enough saw some for sale in a garden centre in a plastic tub but they where dead presume you want the live ones. They where nearly eight quid for these tubs. Try looking on the web for The Mealworm company. Changed name to Livefoodsdirect.co.uk

they come in three sizes, waxmoth grubs look ok as well

On the road to rack & ruin !!!
Most pet food suppliers or specialist type pet shops supply them.I did think of using them myself on a commercial type fishery to see howcarp would react to them, after all the odd caterpillar must end up falling into lakes etc... and the fish eat them and meal worms are very similar.

Iwas told by someone though that when hooked and in the water, mealworms don`t wriggle around as much as you possibly think.

Ive tried mealworms a couple of timesas my brothers are into keeping weird pets.

To be honest they die very quickly in the water and give me bog standard maggot /worm/caster anyday of the week.

Along the same lines as this post. My local tackle store was throwing out a load of rag following a disaster and I grabbed some out of curiosity.

I found out that chopped ragworm works every bit as well as chopped lobs and caught several pounds of fish on little peices of it on the day.

Its certainly worth giving it a go and seeing for yourself for the days when you cant get lobs and you need chopped worm.

My wife is Belgian and I have fished over there extensively in the past. Meal worms are available from tackle shops and they are often used on any method trout fisheries, as are grass hoppers and small live fish that are sold for bait. The fish are about the size of a minnow but are area golden colour,. All of the above baits would make good change baits, but as has been said previously, they don't last too long on the hook.

Over here meal worms and grass hoppers are available from pet shops, especially those that specialise in reptiles.
