yesterday whilst fishing I kept getting big sail away bites that when I struck failed to hook a fish

I fish over deptth , then up i nthe water. I left bites for 10 seconds and hit bites straight away - same result - no fish

I did catch a roach and a crusian but that was it for 4 hours

any idea how to conbat these bites

I was fishing with red maggot

Lad in the next peg was using worm and bread and did n't get a bite until I gave him some of my maggots - he ended up with 5 fish

This can often be the work of crays and in the spring when the newts are in the water it can be down to them Iwould have thought this time of year it will more than likely be crays.

Could be you're just like the other PaSC members, a carp angler! :D

Oh sorry, interchange the middle two letters of 'carp'.

As Jerry say, liner or maybe they were just teasing you by sucking the juice out of the maggot. Did any maggots come back looking like a spent condom?

Does the venue have an abundance of Crayfish?
If so, then they might well be the culprits.

If not, then "liners' would be the obvious train of thought.

Did the lad in the next peg (how far away?) suffer the same or not?

Sometimes a change of hook pattern makes a difference also the maggots were they ugly or good looking ones?

A little blusher and lippy on a maggot can make or break a good days fishing...

have known in the past roach having a go at your shots in mistake for
hempseed, combat this by using styls instead of shot ,sounds a bit drastic
but if its a venue where they get plenty of seed its possible, cheers

Crucian bites can be lightning fast, easy to miss and frustrating too.

Also, had this happen alot with small eels, just picking up the hookbait in thier mouths and swimming backwards with it... cane be very hard to hit them.

Could be a number of things but thats 2 possibles.

There are some very clever fish down there although I havent had this a lot with maggots--- could be because I dont fish with them !! However I have suffered this a lot with breadflake Usually start by hitting the bites and then it turns into a battle of wits that I lose. I can remember this happening big style on the Wharfe using single maggot when trying to catch Dace close in. They were circus performers ! It all adds to the charm of angling as you choke with fury. What fun. Not every problem has an answer.

If rape is inevitable ........ lay back and enjoy it.

What size hook were u using chap? Little silvers might be taking the bait and if the hook is too big for em theyll give you indications without being hooked.
