Hi this is my first post, I've been looking for a few places to do some winter chubbing and spotted some promising places.
I am just curious if anybody knows of any good stretches of the middle Derwent or any streams, brooks or tributaries? I do most of my fishing on the belper stretch of the Derwent but I've been struggling for almost 2 seasons to catch my first chub from that area, I saw 14+ in the summer when I went for a walk and just so happened to not have any tackle with me! How typical is that! And some of them looked 6lb+ they were huge, but now we have had the floods I'm not sure they are even there any more I heard rumours of lots of barbel being caught out of Milford (on the same ticket as belper) so have they all been washed down stream?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Ross

Hi Ross,
I have seen big Chub in the Amber at Ambergate before when I used to go fishing that way but I never found out if you could actually fish the Amber.
As for the fish being washed down stream, well I think you may find that they are still there but may have been dispersed a little. The Derwent as allways been Famous for flooding as you know, but I have never known it to affect the fishing from one stretch to another.

Cheers mate really appreciate it, I've fished the amber few times some good chub there and trout but it floods worse than the Derwent so couldn't get on there. I think you have settled it I'm just going to alter my approach and scale things down but the leaves and debris are a real problem. I'm going to try a few swims I know don't get any use aswell. I'm pretty much the only person that fishes the Derwent at the minute in belper.

I know the Derwent has lost a lot of anglers over the last few years but I don't understand why, it is a cracking river when it's ''on'' and the fish, especially the grayling are superb.
I don't fish my home turf much these days as most of my tackle is up in Chorley at my girlfriends and I spend my weekends up here (by the way Ross, the fishing up in this area is amazing!) but I am tempted to have a go on the Derwent when the light nights come round again. I only live the other side of Alfreton so I am not that far away from the river.

Like isaid I've seen the chub in the summer when I w as walking down the side of the river after I'd got my bait from tackle shop for the weekend session, there so many big chub there but catching them is not easy. The grayling fishing is second to none, I've caught more grayling this summer to winter than I have in my whole angling life and again they are big! But the one species that seem to rule my stretch of the Derwent is the my favourate of all .... The perch going 4-5lb yes I did not miss type 4-5lb they are monsters I've seen 2 chase a 5" lure and a spinner and my heart sank as soon as they came into sight but unfortunately neither one struck for the lure, I've had that many 2lb + perch I've lost count up to 2lb 10oz and ill be going back soon to target the big ones.

Ross, do you know Martin Jakes that owns the tackle shop? Great lad and his fishing knowledge is top notch. I have known Martin all his life, he lives in our village and his dad was a great friend of my uncle. I hear he is doing OK with the shop?

Yes I know him, I think he gets tired of me going in the shop and picking his brains about every swim, every peg and every species haha. He does tell me the news that reaches him though. It's a shame nobody fishes the stretches I fish so I could find info on them, like I've Saudi know there are fish there they are jus not easy to catch and I think that's what puts people off.
