I've just been to pick up my Fox Specialist rod and I must say, that it feels great.

At ?81.00 it looks a real bargain. Has anybody got one?

Yes, had one for over a year now and I have landed barbel 10lb 12oz, Pike, 16lb, chub to 43/4 lb, tench to 53/4 lb, zander to 91/2 lb plus other with it. It's a true allrounder and handles lines up to 10 lb test with ease.

Dislikes: I wish it was available in 3 pieces and matt finish.

Ron,
Would this rod be good for general river fishing (on the lower Thames)using 3-6lb lines?
Also, what would be a good reel to match it up with?
Presently got a Drennan match rod, but found it a little bit too light when I 'hit into' one or two larger fish -which I lost! :(

Using the quiver top I would say it's an ideal rod for rivers like the Thames. I wouln't use less than a 4 lb line on it personally.

I have an absolutely brilliant Drennan rod which I use for float fishing. Its called the "Long Distance Float" and at 131/2 feet it has the most delightful through action.

Its lovely tench float rod with lines 4 to 6 lb.

Ive also been looking at the Daiwa Barbel Special. A very nice piece of kit this but I wish they would put the sreel seat the right way round ie: downlocking. And whilst they are about it they could cover the screw thread bit with cork or cork coloured Duplon like they do on the Fox rods.

I have put blisters on the palm of my right hand in yers past playing fish which have uplocking reel seats.

Ron,
Thanks for the info. & quick reply!
I'll be giving this rod a close look, it may be exactly what I'm after.

Been using the Barbel Specialist the last 3 weeks of the season.(Picked one up second hand for ?80!) Caught my first Barbel of 6lb 10oz on it! Now wheelin' & dealin' for a second one and planning a summer Barbel campaign on the Thames.

With fish of that size, how about tips on bait? {:)

Back to the rod, I just can't wait to use it now. I have coupled the rod with a Shimano 6000 gte, another bit of advice from the forum, Thank's Dan.
