Massive fishkill on the lower Lea by the Olympic Park reported on the BBC today echoes Bruno's article - massive oxygen depletion owing to the heatwave followed by a big electrical storm dumping umpteen gallons of run-off oxygen-free and polluted water into the river: belly-up fish by the ton.

A common occurrence well know to pond keepers.

My filters are cleaned, the air stones are fizzing and the pump is going full tilt, the uv tubes are replaced and the sun screens are drawn.

Its a relatively common occurrence on some of the slow shallow drains in Fenland (such as the Old Bedford) in prolonged hot and dry conditions. I believe the technical term for the phenomenon is 'Instant Eutrophication'.

Sad news, the same happened to a lake local to me recently.

I am however surprised about the presence of hake!
