hi every body.having purchased what was considered to be the bees knees in the power waggler genre,[garbolino specimen power waggler rod] I was disappointed when hooking a 5lb carp having the rod bend double and taking much to long to land the fish. could anybody please suggest a rod[not a carp rod] that would be more successful in the landing of fish up to double figures I have seen somebody using a korum quiver set up and I was not sure whether this would be suitable for my problem. I thank you in anticipation

interesting one this as I am a big fan of fishing underpowered and using Specimen float rods at 13ft. Your rod does bend a bit but copes and you have a lot of fun thereby! My first choice is a Fox duo light at about £85 and prefer it to my Hardy Marksman at the same spec.

Know nothing of the Garbolino but if you need to kill fish quickly (as in match fishing) then I suggest that you go beyond the float waggler spec and look for at least 1.5lb test curve

I find the Greys Prodigy Specialist good for float work using the 1.5lb tip and the 2lb tip can be used with a light feeder. I have had one for afew yearsnow and stillreally enjoy using it. It has a full cork handle, is slim and light - so doesn't look like a carp rod.

I also see Greys have their newG-Tec range of waggler rods on their website. Although I know nothing about them, maybe worth a look?

If like me you prefer a longer rod, tryMiddy Animal tamer. Retails at around £90 and I've had carp up to 15 pound on mine.

Dave - I've got the Garbolino Nouveau Power Maxim, which is about 8 years old and might be the same blank as yours. It's designed to be used with up to 6lb lines, but has a soft tip to allow lighter hook lengths to be used if desired. I use it for most of my river float fishing for barbel, chub ad grayling. It does bend rather scarily when used with 6lb straigth through, but thats what its designed to do and it can put an awful lot of pressure on a fish without locking up.

I'd suggest persevering with it - take it to a carp puddle get some 6lb line on it and experiment. Don't worry about it snapping - it won't (famous last words!!)

I can thoroughly recommend the duolite specialist and avon rods - they are excellent and light enough to be used asa float rod. I've had barbel to 8lb on my avon with 10lb line straight through, but it did creak a bit!

The avon is designed for chub, tench, breamand small barbel and the specialist is the perch and roach rod

thank you Barney 2, mike gibson and Sean for your observations.Sean, I must say the rod feels brilliant and you are probably right when you suggest sticking with it. I'll give it a try. thank you once again

One of the Drennan Series 7 rods will meet the requirement but I agree with Sean, it's amazing what some rods will cope with. It needs confidence to apply max pressure but again as Sean says, try it out, I often use Gold Valley which has more than itsfair share of double figure carp,to try out new things.

I can second the Drennan Series 7, think mine is a carp power float 13ft. I managed to land a 22lb common on floating crust with 8lb line, it was a grteat fight, but the rod did cope with the fish and was a pleasure to use.

I have also used the rod to fish for bream and roach and found it sensitive enough for 3lb hook links.

Have a look at the link below as this is the rod I use:
