This may seem a silly question but do you need a licence for a marker float?

No hook but it is sitting in the water!

Thanks

John

Answer....

No.

The marker rod is not 'atempting to catch a fish by means of rod and line'

Mark,

In which case then I would think that you might need a license for a Spod rod as that is used to 'attempting to catch fish etc. . . . . . . ?

Interesting point though . . . .

It is a moot point really as most of us fish 3 carp rods and have 2 licenses, so the 4th rod (in use) is either a spod rod or a marker rod.

But, for the angler with 2 rods out and using a spod or marker rod I am unsure of the rules on that.

As for being a 'trebuchet' surely the humble catty is closer to that mark?

ooh ooh, let's have a trebuchet debait.

A catty is a catapult ie it's energy comes from the tension in the elastic. It launches it's load (fnarr!) in a linear fashion.

However, the trebuchet (a proper one that is) gets it's energy from a counter weight that swings the load in an arc before releasing it - a bit like casting.

And there we have it.

Peter,

No.

Show me how to catch a fish with a spod?

Interesting though, information on-line from the EA is very poor. I'm stating things from memory at the moment, so I expect to be corrected.

I seem to remember the definition of 'fishing with rod and line' included the statement 'with baited hook or lure'

Hopefully someone can enlighten us................ (and make me look an arse!) /forum/smilies/smile_smiley.gif

Mark,

I'm only playing with the words; one could define "attempting" as using a spod to entice fish into a given area in order "to catch with rod and line"

I have checked on the Southern and SW Regions EA website and you are right, it is very poorly (if at all) covered.

Maybe someone from the EA who might be looking in could assist?

Blimey Matt, that's not a debate, that's just a statement of fact - perhaps what we really need is a debate on what actually constitutes a debate /forum/smilies/smile_smiley.gif

Incidentally, you've not been spending your weekends re-creating medieval battle machinery have you? Get out and do some fishing intead!

If you needed alicense for using a spod rod then you would surely need one for using a bait boat......

Then you would need a bait boat licence. /forum/smilies/wink_smiley.gif

I asked this question of the EA
I was wondering if when I am fishing 2 rods (baited and hooked) and
have a marker float rod aswell ( just a weight aand a float to mark
position, do I need to have two ea licences.

I am only using 2 rods to fish with, the third is purely a marker,
sometimes a fourth is used for Spodding, these are not fishing rods and
lines but just feeding and marking tools, do they require a second
licence.

I plan to use these tactics on a commercial fishery next month and need
to know how many licenses to buy.

Thanks

Mike Last

here is the reply from the EA
Dear Mr Last

Thank you for your e-mail about fishing. Your method for fishing is
fine, as long as there are no hooks at the end of the lines you are
using as a marker float or spodding with. If you have further questions
please feel free to contact our Fisheries Administration and Support
Team on 01925 542400 .

Kind regards and good luck fishing
