I've started to really enjoy fishing the canal for silvers recently and I've even signed up for a "silvers syndicate" group of waters. I use a 13ft Daiwa match rod (it's a good 25/30 years old) which is in quite a bad state and needs replacing soon. The 13ft length is just.a.bit too much on my local canal as space is limited on the best stretches, a 12ft length would be much nicer in my opinion after using a friend's the other day. I'll mainly be fishing for roach, dace, perch and chublets but may pick up the odd few tench or big chub so will need a little backbone. I doubt I'll ever use it to catch fish of anything more that three of four pounds so soft and tippy is what I'm after. Spending limit is ideal 50 or 60 pounds sort of thing and I don't want anything fancy.

Cheers, cal

Hi Cal,
Given that you've signed-up for a 'silvers syndicate':
- what sort of waters have they got?
- would the 'canal' rod be used for these waters as well?
- would 12' be sufficient for these?
- I think your £50-60 budget is a bit OTT - unless you really want to turn into a TT (as previously warned! ;))
- a Maver Abyss for example can be picked up for £30 and would probably do you nicely for most of your needs - it's a good general purpose light rod.

Only splash out money on a specialised rod when you've determined exactly what your needs are! (A lesson for life there!)

Hi greenie,

There are 3 ponds on the syndicate... The carp pond; carp to about 6lb most plus bream and tench of around 3 or 4lb. Silvers pond containing skimmers, roach, rudd, perch, chub etc etc. Then theres a tench pond which is open next year, will be (obviously) lots of tench going over 4lb as well as rudd and maybe some crucians.

I have looked at the maver match rods, and may just get a 13ft to cover my float fishing needs. Local tackle shop has a Lineaffe 390 VR Match 11-13 foot commercial something pr other rod which I like the look of, might go for this as the multi length feature would be extremely handy. Plus I've seen it on chapmans with am okuma reel for £35!
