After Nicepix excellent thread.... Why not? Your top three baits. Of course this will reflect our own styles and interests... but be good to survey opinions.

1. Bread (for simplicity brown and white)

2. Banana Cheese paste (a little surprise... but it tore off)

3. Locusts

Just as they come up since keeping accurate records....

Bread flake

Bread crust

Bread paste

low cost
easily available almost everywhere, often at reduced prices,
converts easily into mash or liquidised groundbait,
can be frozen and reused,
has zero hazards to health,
doesn't smell,
catches all species,
etc etc etc.

As a last resort you can eat it yourself :D

Yep, I like bread.

Small red worms from my own wormery are my usual first choice when exploring new waters.

Sweetcorn / Maize is my second 'to go' bait when fishing new waters and I have landed more 15lb + carp on corn than on everything else put together.

Pellets of all sizes. The micro pellets banded onto an 18 or 16 produce some suprising results as well as the small stuff.

I can't include bread as it is so difficult to obtain over here in a form suitable for fishing other than to grind up for groundbait. When you do find a good loaf it tends to go stale within an hour or so of being opened up.

Maggot

Caster

Brandlings

I don't fish for toothy things, so those will catch pretty much anything I might want to. However, should I resort to long stay carping, boilies will come out to play.

Worms (pref lobs)
Maggots (pref Bronze / Red)
Halibut Pellets (6mm banded)

Probably caught 80% of my fish on these - only started with the pellets this year and was amazed at how effective they were from the start!

A lot depends on the target species so as I fish mainly for Roach, Dace and Chub on the river then mine would be:

Maggot

Caster

Bread

For Carp and Tench however then it changes to:

Boilies

Maggot

Tiger Nuts (where allowed)

Interestingly, the things listed here are identical to the worst bait thread!

Anyway, my top 3:
