I belong to a few FB groups 2 are to do with fishing 1 is local history (very interesting) and 1 is Aston Villa (not very interesting but getting better) I wouldn't say that they are any better or worse than this forum just a different medium.

I don't do the facebook thing, I did have a dormant account after registering few years ago but deleted it despite numerous warnings from facebook that I would never be able to re-join.

I now get emails from facebook urging me to re-join

I haven't logged out for 7 years.

Mainly because I can't remember my password....:eek:mg:

I am a member of certain Facebook groups, mostly fishing groups but prefer the friendly intimacy of this forum...

Searching for topics seems fairly painless too....

I am on Faceache very regularly. However, I rarely post anything and I'm a member of only a few fishing related groups. I generally find those I've looked at quite painful. I find that they offer little that forums don't. In many ways they are inferior. I can certainly find better quality information, more easily, on forums than I can on Faceache. The only potential improvement is the huge potential readership. Far and away greater than any forum I know of. Great if you've got something to flog. There are certainly plenty of entities trying to part you from your cash. However, I firmly believe that forums are generally inhabited by a greater percentage of real enthusiasts. Therefore, the quality of response, provided you get one, is greater. I'd sooner have one quality response on a forum than a hundred rubbish ones on Facebook.

I'm sure Facebook will provide many with all that they require. It certainly doesn't suit me though.

I am part of two Facebook angling groups. 1. Barbel fishing UK, 2. Tench fishing UK, both run by you I believe Dave. I find them interesting in a different way to forums in the respect that there seems to be a lot more pulling power on Facebook in regards to the skill level of the members. There seems to be a far greater diversity in skill level on Facebook, where as on forums there seems to be a higher level of skill and knowledge. I come to the forum for advice and a good read up, I turn to the Facebook groups to see what people have been up to, I find both engaging in different ways. :)

Are Facebook Species groups a better place to be?
I started these groups over 5 years ago now and have over 100,000 members.

What do you guys think?

It depends what you mean by better Dave? If you mean in terms of numbers, then yes clearly but if you mean in terms of specialist knowledge and sensible opinion from seasoned anglers probably not.

I know a lot of good anglers frequent the groups but I find most of them are off fishing rather than sat at home hanging around on facebook?

If someone's just starting out and wants to learn about a species local to them or basic stuff like what bait to use, what tackle is best suited etc. then access to facebook groups (unlimited) with the one login is a huge plus. It gives people access to hundreds of different groups and all their friends and family can share information based on individual privacy settings. From what I can see, the amount of pictures uploaded on facebook groups enables people to show off captures better as they can share it amongst groups and other peoples walls as well as feed their own time line.

As I've said before on here; the picture uploading thing is what puts new members off from contributing. Even the appeal of anonymity takes second place for those who simply want to share what they've caught.

I'm a member of a good few groups but I don't post my captures and reports, not even on here, I reserve any bragging rights amongst people I fish with, but I do occasionally offer a bit of advice and encourage some of the younger posters on facebook with a 'like'.

I rarely use Facebook other than to occasionally catch up with what "friends" (people i have often not spoken to directly for over 10 years!) are up to. Some family members use the messaging a lot. So far as interests like fishing are concerned I prefer the anonymity of a forum. Some argue that attracts trolls etc, but it can also allow people to speak freely maybe contentiously if they feel the need.

I don't generally feel the need to reveal my poor catches to a wider audience so -No, not for me.

I like it here. It feels comfortable. It is also like a magazine.

I joined FB earlier this year after holding out against it, and indeed joined some of Dave's FB species groups.

Two months later I deleted my account as I decided that FB wasn't for me at all.

Those groups don't seem very active compared to here. Facebook is a terrible place to have a conversation, a forum has much more room.

The Roach species group is excellent, some real good info exchange on their plus lovely pics of big and small roach.

The Crucian one is a different matter, lots of brown goldfish, F1s and small commons posted there and some people get quite upset about things for some reason and can't wait to shoot peoples pics down

I do get annoyed with the lazy people though who post

'where did you catch it from bruv?'
'what bait was it on?'

There is also a lot of pics submitted with camping chairs, 3lb test curve rods and packs of beer in the background
