Float making.

PEANUTS FISHING ADVENTURES - THE RIVER IRWELL AND BEYOND.: Heavy Wire Stemed Avon - Out For Testing.

I have been asked to make a. . . .

" Medium To Heavy Wire Stemed Avon "

for winter maggot & caster fishing , mainly for the the River Ribble &River Dove.

I have tried to cover all bases with this float and make it a multi-tasker so if under shot the float can be used for bread, meat , pellet and paste. ?

Requirements were 3 -4g (4 - 5 AAA ish ) with an alloy stem.

I think all of your floats show a craftsmanship akin to works of art but for me that is by far the nicest I have seen to date, stunning!

I really like the colour scheme on that and would be tempted to add 'worm float' to its list of all round capabilities, not far off the body shape of a bobber and a nice length tip which won't disappear with all the nips and dropped attempts that clumsy old Mr Perch often makes on a large worm.

Floats are wonderful things and I as I'm sure many get completely immersed with having to have exactly the right float for such particular circumstances when in truth far fewer would suffice subject to how they are shotted down.

Just let me know when mine's ready, if you need to take your time and make it a set of three it's no problem

With what would usually be the eye painted as per a tip colour and the silder ring they can be fished either way around as bobbers, avons, sliders, bodied wagglers etc.

I have just done a final weight capacity check.

The avon is a little heavier than I anticpated and takes 4.8g ( 6 AAA ) to cock it but its in the ball park . . . .

Those floats seem to me to be beautifully made but too much a Jack of all trades, master of none. I'd much rather use a well-made purpose built float even if it meant carrying five times more floats.

Steve has a pik of a few of mine with a "Topper" amongst them if I remember correctly, I hasten to add however that I was in no way attempting to copy the topper, simply making cheap, easy to make avon style floats to use on the trent for barbel.

I can vaguely remember it from some time ago Mick but wouldn't have a clue where to find it now but if you want to email or text me any pics i'll happily upload them

As far as I can remember a topper is just a short stemmed bodied waggler....no,no that's a £ucker lol.

Ok, sixth on the left is a topper.all the rest were made specifically for conditions pertinant to the Trent.
The white topped ones for autumn when the sun is getting lower daytimes . On some swims its upstream of of me and red and black fails a little at long range but the white just lights up so well.
Third from left tho not visible has a tapered body as one swim is a little boilly and was made hopefully to "cut the downstream and sideways " push of water to avoid sudden swerves left or right, no to sure it was a success but
it still catches good fish.
The thick topped ones have the polystyrene "avalon float" inserts as a few swims demand extreme long trotting.
The high shouldered ones to keep the float high on the surface when the river has a northerly on it giving it high rollers (white horses).
Others,variations on a theme but all work on the day.
One last thing about bird quills is the natural curve-- natures way of allowing a float to lift off the waters surface far easier than a straight one, a big plus when trotting long distances.
oh, and all virtually free for the picking up!.

Of these the one on the left and the two blue ones on the right are Toppers. None have a shoulder, all have very light bodies, one is hollow balsa, the other two are styrofoam, all take upwards of 10BB, all have a tip of 1.25".

You have the same idea as me mark when you knock a quill float up, no inclusion of the cutaway /pared back stem thats folded over and whipped to form the eye that line is threaded thro.
I either whip the base to receive a silicon sleeve or of late fit a half inch of shrink tubing that secures the whip and takes the silicon line sleeve.
Aldi do a cracking assortment of the shrink tubing for very little outlay.

I whipped on a size 8, took an AAA shot off and baited up with a mahoosive lump of bread.

Just looked very much like a sea trout what with the black spots, all my browns have had the normal red spots
