Perch Bobs

I don't know if you guys have the same experience but I would say approximately 90% of the big perch I have caught have been in the margin, some in no more than a foot of water.

By far the majority of my fish come just off the rod end.

I feel confident if there's a decent depth of water though and will bear in mind your success in much shallower.

I use the 15' float rod for poking baits under trees and bushes to either side of an otherwise clear swim and really enjoy it, I also use it a lot with livebait paternoster rigs...

Very interesting thread , I mainly fish for perch on the Severn around Shrewsbury , with some success , a few 3 lbers but nothing to compare to some of the fish posted on here. Our club rules don't allow live baiting but do allow fishing with minnows . I must admit I've generally used lob worm which is fine in the winter but hard in warmer weather as it can get battered by other fish. My only live baiting has been on the local canal with mixed results , I've used circle hooks and tried lip and tail hooking but my bite to fish ratio is pretty low. I've mainly just used a running ledger rig but will give the paternoster rig a try later in the year . Thanks all for the advise given it's got me thinking:)

The rig I use is as shown.

Nice one. Your Perch rig is literally exactly my Pike rig...just add a wire trace and sliding pike float.

However I have not been brave enough to use the JR paternoster boom for Perch as it just looked too chunky and blatant to me but judging by your results perhaps I was over worrying !

Out of interest as a result of that “fear” of using the JR boom I came up with a very simple alternative paternoster rig for Perch..…basically a Drennan Chubber like you suggest…I leave mine sliding on the line with a stop knot above it. Although no reason it can’t be attached top and bottom if your fishing shallow water. I then tie on a size 6 Dennan Super specialist hook and bulk a line of AAAs about 6 inches from it to cock the float and keep the bait down.

For the paternoster link I then take a length of line slightly weaker than my main line (or use a bit of main line with a few granny knots in it). I tie a ¾ oz lead on one end and tie an overhand loop in the other end, importantly, I tie the overhand loop just once not twice leaving a tag end I can pull. I then pass the loop over the hook and up the line over the line of bulk AAA shot. I then pull the tag to close the loop till it pulls tight against the mainline. I then slide the resulting knot down to rest on top of the bulk shot.

The result is a very delicate and subtle paternoster. If you dangle it off the rod top the weight of the 3/4oz bomb kicks the shot and bait out to one side so its surprisingly tangle free. The other advantage is that if you do snap off the paternoster link with the bomb easily slides off the main line with minimum effort.

I used it allot with small livebaits and it worked very well.

Probably will be Steve . . . I have a fair few of Mr Field's floats including a couple of his excellent Fishing Gazette pike bungs . . . . . . and those were £25 each when I bought them

very nice for a collector perhaps but in my world I could never justify paying that sort of money for something that would just be looked at and not used, it's a copy of a Venables float that's all its not one he used or owned there is no history attached to it and to be honest I reckon I have seen some in the flesh that are just as good. ;)

Not for me either! I would rather have one of Binka's as they look just as good, are proven in practice and only cost the equivalent of 8 cans of St Miguel:rolleyes: They will become a collectors item!;)

I fish with 'em layed on the bottom and suspended Skip, one of my favourites is just standing it up three or four inches off bottom just as if you were bloodworm fishing and you will often see the float slightly pulling down when the worm touches the deck and manages to get a grip on something.

It's a quick and easy job to just lighten up on the shot if you're coming up off the deck to fish off bottom.

I've seen bobbers shotted right down to the tip stem in the past which defeats the whole object of them imo, they should have plenty of shoulder above the surface.

Also fish with one suspended & just on the bottom, with the smallest drennan bobber I seem to be able to get away with no shot at all if the worm is big enough. & Agree Steve that they do seem to play with it at first & the bobber helps as you said .

A brilliant thread and Binkas floats look amazing,
I am going to target a small club water soon that holds some big perch,
the first part I am going t try is in the margins more or less under some
branches, using chopped worm over chopped prawns mixed in predator plus or liquid worm, it will not be a traditional perch bobber attack with rod and reel it will be a margin pole,
Unfortunatly again I cant tick "Like" to the posts, but I have rated it 5 stars,
keep up the good work, it took me back to when I was a kid and fished
the Bridgewater Canal with smaller style floats, cane rod and a black prince reel

Should perch bobbers be attached to the line like a waggler or with float rubbers?

Those I have seen have an eye at the bottom of the stem!

I doubt it matters much but if you get dragged through marginal reeds the rubber bands will slide and maybe save the float from damage?

Just re read it and I should use it top and bottom rubbers at short range worming a la Binka style.

This is a nice little lot for anyone wanting to take a few tentative steps into float making with a spot of light renovation, to while away the long winter nights.

I can pick out a fair few nice ones that would come up trumps...

VINTAGE FISHING FLOATS, PERCH BOBBERS, CHUB, BARBEL, RIVER FISHING. | eBay

The spherical-bodied bobber with orange top is the same design as my very first float, although mine was a darker green with yellow top. This was mid 70s, so cards of those floats were still on sale in the older shops. The hooks I inherited were rusty and the shot was very second-hand and complete with the previous user's bite marks. :D
