Why is that the majority manufactures no longer make shallow match spools to take 100 - 110 metres of line.
As Sam says, the worldwide mass market is different to the relatively small UK market and with many seemingly buying 'off the shelf' models it's Hobson's Choice for them. It amazes me as I can't see that making a shallower alloy spool would cost that much anyway in tooling and if it was CNC made then virtually no tooling (but slower to make and higher unit cost I suspect).
Most anglers these days have forgotten how to fish rivers with a float and 2 lb line, it's now a case of sitting on the banks of rivers like the Trent with two rods pointing skywards, reading the Angling Times and waiting for a double figure Barbel to hook itself and bend the rod double.
If more of the younger generation were brought up standing in the river a rod lengths from the bank for hours on end fishing "Casters" and loose feeding ten or so "Cooked Hemp" seeds regularly from pockets in your oversize bait apron, trotting a wire stemmed stick float with your 13" float rod, Mitchell "Match" reel fitted with a 100 yard maximum capacity 2 lb line on your "Ultra Shallow Match" spool, the thrill of a days fishing would not be lost on the younger generation and manufacturers would be forced to cater for proper anglers not the "Rod in the Sky" brigade or "Hook a Duck" so called match Anglers fishing for semi tame F1's ??? from water filed holes in farmers fields. Fishing is not hook it and pull it out as quick as you can so you can shove it in one of you FIVE keep nets to weigh in 300 lb of fish after 6 hours sitting on your posh tackle chair
Or at 73 an i missing something !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Spare spools are slowly vanishing from the mass market.
Why is why I'm still fishing Mitchell Matches with ultra shallow spools and 2lb line....
So last week I purchased a Daiwa TDM (Team Daiwa MATCH) 2508 the smallest size, for my Drennan acolyte.
I've found the perfect use for Daiwa Sensor.
