I'm tired of having no angling friends. If anyone wants to meet up and go for a fish sometime send me a PM and we will sort something out. I'm up for any type of fishing with any one of any age but have limited transportation.

Are there any clubs local to you where you will meet anglers?

Yes, I live in Rugby (Warickshire WM). There are clubs dotted around but I have commitment issues.

What have commitment issues got to do with joining a club?

There’s nothing “permanent” about joining a club. I belong to a couple of clubs and don’t feel committed in any way, I fish their venues when I please.

I think there's misconceptions about joining clubs, I know as I've been on both sides.

Back in the day me and dad were adamant that we wouldn't join a club, the free waters were top draw anyway so why pay money, but it turns out it's now cheaper on fuel to join a local club than to travel further to free waters.

Also we had the idea that the fishing would be hard as everybody would be a top angler and that those anglers would be clicky and not welcoming to newbies such as ourselves. Couldn't be more wrong. The club anglers were just the same and had a broad range of skills with many being novices. The waters were often better as the the stock was cared for. The anglers look out for each other and you can often leave your gear and go walkabouts, something you cannot do on a public water. I can even leave dad and fish out of sight knowing that the others will look out for him.

I don't understand how commercial waters can be so popular when they are so pricey when the local clubs usually have similar waters plus miles of peaceful rivers, like S63 says just turn up and fish

I always visit waters that I am looking at joining to see if they are cared for and how members respond when walking round. I always ask for permission unless there is a public footpath round the water.

An angler can put as much or as little into the club as they decide there is nothing permanent, don't like it don't renew your membership.

The club I belong to is friendly the anglers are helpful yes there are some I see doing things that I think affect their fishing and not all including me are top notch anglers, I would imagine most clubs are the same and are only to glad to have new members, join don't join all down to the individual but not joining means you could be missing out on good fishing.

Thing is Artist, I have miles of the Avon on my front doorstep for free.. I am obsessed with it, I know you can relate.
My main concern is that as I primarily fish rivers so i probably wont meet many other anglers within the club and (in my experience) river guys tend to be a bit secretive and cliquey. Am I being silly?
btw its not that I have no interest in still waters, they just dont capture my imagination like rivers do. Every time I fish still waters it turns into more socializing than fishing..
I wont name them but I did try to arrange a taster trip to a club lake but they refused to let me fish before I paid at least 6 months unless I was someones guest.. It was a rather bizarre experience for me lol.

If you don’t wish to join a club, then continue with your miles of free river and I’m sure you’ll find an angler or two that you can talk to and possibly strike up a friendship.

I'm sure you would meet other river anglers but it's a misnomer to call them cliquey, I haven't found that but like any group they would be wary about revealing all to someone they don't know, In time you would be one of the bunch and info would be gained along with friendship, sure there's guys who are solitary and secretive but many who are not

What do you want from your fishing companion if it isn't socialising? Sometimes fishing with someone can be restrictive and the social element takes precedence

When I fish with Steve or Kev I sometimes spend a while watching and chatting, I have learned some things that have helped me with my Tench fishing this year and also about feeding to attract the larger fish.

As far as I am concerned its a part of the day that I really enjoy and as someone said there's more to fishing than fish.

Yep, when I've met up with Simon we've done more chatting than fishing, and when I go with dad it's similar

When I fish with someone I have been known to hardly fish at all,in fact a good friend of mine used to get quite peeved that i could sit behind him for hours,to back to my swim and start catching fish,I explained that before I'd left my spot I'd fed 10 pouches of hemp plus bookmark samples to give them something to get confident on,these days I mainly fish alone so I rest the swim for an hour or so,not casting, feeding, anything.

They seem to all be chavs or Polish/Lithuanian.. which I dont mind but both practice very poor fish care. I saw a group of chavs using a 1/2lb rudd as live bait once.. I was mortified.

I love to socialize but I like to find a balance, if you know what I mean. On a river i am happy to share a swim with someone else but on a still water that just doesnt really happen.

Perhaps you should befriend them and educate them in the correct ways of fish care and what is a suitable livebait.
