I'll start;

A Macmanaman: a rod with no backbone and so floppy as to be useless.

An Andy Carrol: a rod so unreliable it makes An Acolyte Ultra 14' look robust!

A Podborski; a rod fit for one session only

An Ozil; a rod which can catch you a bag full one day and a cold the next!

An Owen Hargreaves, a Kleberson: rods not fit for purpose and not worth keeping!

An Alexis Sanchez; a ludicrously priced rod which can disappear on the bank and let you down! Not worth buying!

À Rooney: a worn out and tired blank not even worth keeping for a special occasion!

A Savage: overrated rod best suited to the pursuit of non existant fish in a remote and far away place!

I could go on forever!!!

A Hazard......beautifully balanced and an extraordinarily expensive rod in huge demand, short for those tricky swims but with power in the core when needed., great striking action.

I realise all mine were negative which shows the very low esteem in which I hold footballers!

I'd buy a Hazard!!!!

A Southall; original model had a very slim blank and a lovely action! Sadly the current model is no longer the case!

Saw Southall just a few years ago playing for Torquay against what was my local club, Brentford, the club that boasted a pub at every corner of its ground, looked like Neville visited them all.

The Razor Ruddock vintage greenheart rod, heavy, ungainly and, in the distant past, it was a reasonable performer but unusable now.

Robert Lewandowski - Daiwa Air Z (I don’t know anything about poles but it looks like the best and most expensive)

Jack Wilshere - Acolyte Ultra - very delicate touch, breaks when breathed on

Gazza - Normark titan 2000 - era defining performance, great all rounder, often copied, never bettered. Normally found these days with top 3 inches missing.

Mo Salah - tournament pro feeder - fast action, quality finish

James Milner - Tricast 4x4 feeder - versatile, reliable

Virgil Van Dyke - Preston Dutchmaster
