My local canal has gone like milk, dirty white and you cannot see the bottom. Each year it gets covered in thick algae style weed from May-November then it does die back with frost if we don't have rain like now.

Do you think it's a chemical reaction with the weed, dissolving on the bottom turning the water white/milky?

No idea pal, might be worth phoning the EA. They should send someone down. They did when our brook went white. I was told milk is their biggest worry as it strips the oxygen out of the water.

Thanks rich66 oddly it happened last year too. Now it's clear again, I'm sure it's a kind of light pollution given off by the dying algae after heavy rain pushes it to the bottom.
