This weekend I will be down to fish the Avon at Bargate farm - any indications as to the state of the river in this are or how it may be fishing would be gratefully received !!!

Hi Andrew,

I haven't been to Burgate but the Avon lower down is still very high and over the bank in places, I drive along it on my way to work. I am sure Burgate will be the same. I am sticking to the Stour until the Avon falls a bit more as I dont' like the look of the Avon at the moment, high and clear. The Stour looks spot on but the fishing is hard work recently.

Andrew,

On Sunday aroundmid morning it was only just within its banks and with evidence that it had been across the fields previously.

When the Avon is that high and clear it is a difficult 'mistress' and I think I'd be looking elsewhere.

Hi Andrew,

A bit of good news for you.I had a quick look at the Avon yesterday eveningand it seems to be falling. Usuallyit holds up for a long time but it seems yo be falling faster than usual.I did not like the colour though, it had ahorrible brown colour despite being clear before falling. I am staying on the Stour this evening but will try the Avon tomorrow evening and will put a post on the site when I get back to let you know what the river is like.

Andrew/Dave

Was on the new river at Britford yestyerday late/aftrernoon evening and the river was clearing slightly and the water temp rising.

A lot of chub had come out for others and fortunately for me a nice roach obliged later on.

Andrew,

After reading Nigel's post I fished the Avon instead of the Stour this evening. Thanks Nigel. The colour is now perfect and the level has dropped a little more. It is still pushing and the banks are a bit iffy but perfectly fishable if you chhose your swims carefully. Although the bites were a bit tentative I managed a good brace of chub. If the river keeps falling at the current rate it should be just about perfect for your weekend. You will be fishing an excellent chub stretch, with plenty of fish of a very good average size, so you should do well.

Good luck. Let us know how you get on. /forum/smilies/smile_smiley.gif

Well sounds great - will post next week to say how it went, please bear in mind that I do lack a bit of practice and the mighty Avon is very different to may local River Lea

How did your weekend go Andrew? I am very interested as I will be switching to the Avon for the rest of the season and you were on one of the stretches that I fish.

Dave - I do not think that it would fair for you to judge this stretch of river based on my experience this weekend. Both my brother and I blanked with the exception ofminnows I was advised by the "owner" when sold the day tickets that the fishing was HARD !!!

Spoke to one other person who had set his stool out for barbel - he hadnot had a bite since Christmass !!!

I must point out that I AM NOT SPECIALIST !!!! and I think that this Stretch of the Avon was to much for my brother and I.

Not surprissed about the barbel Andrew. They tend to move around a lot this high up the river and may not be where you are fishing for long periods of time. If you do get one though it is likely to be big. If you go there again try larger baits for the chub. I have done very well on lobworms there in the past and cheese can work wellas duskfalls.

I had a walk along the Burgate stretch last week, think I might give it a go before the end of the season hopefully. Plan to trot bread flake, I've hardly fished the Avon as I find the Stour hard enough to get to grips with. Guess I will need to use a much bigger float than usual.

The stour was rising rapidly this afternoon- lets hope we can get some fishing in before the close

The Avon had risen on my way back from work yesterday. Couldn't fish yesterday evening or this evening. And guesswhat? Looking out of my patio door it's snowing this morning.
