Not in the Trent. A couple of weeks ago,I had to identify one for an angler friend who had never seen one before.

It gave him a wrap around on a bunch of maggots meant for "BIG gudgeon"/forum/smilies/big_smile_smiley.gif

They are fairly common in the small chalk streams running through the New Forest and I've seen them in the shallows on the River Itchen.

I used to catch them (with a net) as a kid on the River Slea in Licolnshire along with stone loach. Sadly the Slea suffered a massive fish kill following a pollution incident and, although the EA restocked it with dace, roach and bream I doubt whether they stocked bullheads (they were called 'Miller's Thumb' up there) and loach. So it's a pretty widely distributed fish - or was!!

They exist in both the Hampshire Avon and Dorset Stour.

I have seen them on; the Hampshire Avon, Stour and the Itchen.

On the Nadder and the Wylie a few years ago there were some, but I've not seen any recently.

Lee, although i am not looking to start another war just be very careful with what you say (because it is common knowledge that almost all of the angling clubs that own or lease their stretches on the Trent from the upper to thelower enforce a live bait ban) otherwise you could find yourself in very serious trouble.

William I take the point you are making, but the two clubs I'm in have no such rules, And control about 15 miles of the Upper Trent, Dove and Derwent.

There are certain much sought after swims on Throop that are purported to hold Bullheads of specimen proportions. Local club websites abound with tales of amazing tussles and specialist gear is often discussed at great length. "Fighting Chairs" and harnesses have been mentioned!

i used to net them in a tiny stream near my house, my friend also once picked a perfecly healthy one out of the water with his hands and i kid you not it was gigantic for the species, much bigger than any of us had ever witnessed before. it was maybe about 5 inches or more.
