The Old Bedford was a paradise back in the early '80s but I fear its decline is the tip of the iceberg.

I watched a weather forecaster on the BBC saying it is 'good news' that there's no rain for East Anglia. What a total moron. It's a disaster, for farming, and for the environment.

Maybe some of you folk don't know how dry it's been here. It's barely half the usual rainfall - the lowest since records began (with the exception of 1976, and we all remember how hot that was). The rivers are a series of stagnant pools in many areas, and the farms have been pumping the Fen drains all summer.

A splash of rain this winter won't help, either. The aquifer is running on empty and it would take some sustained rainfall above the average to replenish it. Not that this situation has stemmed the flow; abstraction licences are unabated.
