Sadly, I sense, there is some of India's once-vibrant Anglo-Indian community - BBC News - In pictures: Anglo-Indian community of Calcutta -about the mahseer now. Some of its greatest fishers of the fairly recent past, Anglo-Indians all - Baby West, Bill Davinson, Ivan Mann, Reggie Greene, Morris Mehta, Jimmy Skinner etc - all gone now, with their often mahseer-fisher children got out and living prosperously in Australia, America or Canada.

A few foreign sporting-travel agents and their clients or even the Indian elite and its newly middle-class wannabes, I fear, aren't going to save the fish now: connect with the people on the ground, who live beside the rivers, and, above all, look after them, all of them, for life and not just until the circus decides to move on, then there might just be hope for the fish in a very few places. Local people, place and fish first, not the fame-'n'-glory hunters.
