Yes, I can believe that Ed, I've noticed that roach in clear water seem to be more colourful as well, hmmm! interesting.

A fantastic fish! Well done that man!! 
No question about the colouration and water clarity thing. Fish of most species can be extremely anaemic looking from waters that are constantly turbid.

Lovely fish Jonathon.
I thought that a perch's stripes and colour were more prominent in clearer water where it needs more camouflage !

If you cut it in half you can count the rings, looking at it, i would say abour 8 give it a ring or two

thanks gents,comments much apreciated, fish was rather pale due to colour in water as we had just had bucket loads of rain.but what an awsome fish(if i do say so myself!), as you say a fish of a lifetime and a prehistoric looking old warrior. thanks again gents.
